By that point, the politics had already turned, the public had already formed its view, and the resignation was only a matter of time. That is why this “I am the one exposing it” routine never comforts the public. In Kenya, it is usually the final costume in the scandal wardrobe. First, you are in charge, then you say there is no problem, then you say cartels are fighting back, then you blame disinformation, then, when the fire reaches your seat, you suddenly become a whistleblower. A real whistleblower is usually outside the comfort of power, not seated at the top of the docket signing press releases and issuing directions on the very mess under investigation. So when Wandayi now starts sounding less like the Energy CS and more like a heroic informer, that is not a sign of strength. In Kenyan politics, that is usually the sound of a man nearing the end. Once you start calling yourself a whistleblower from inside the centre of the scandal, you are not surviving but on your way out.
