Sonke: Shared cultures of Southern African people My father was Kalanga, and my mother was Northern Ndebele. When I began this project, my intention was to create a typeface inspired by Northern Ndebele culture (my mother’s side). However Northern Ndebele culture is deeply interconnected with other cultures across Southern Africa. So rather than designing solely for my mother tongue, I then chose to create a typeface that spoke to these shared histories and relationships across the region. This gave rise to the name 'Sonke', meaning “all of us”. Sonke regular [ coming soon ]

WORK-IN-PROGRESS Title: Sonke Sonke draws from the geometric and angular rhythms found in the mural traditions of the Kalanga (Zimbabwe), Sotho (Lesotho), and Southern Ndebele (South Africa) peoples. From @siliconstanford & @words_of_type @Lett_Arc

Here is a simple but useful ha[k for formatting @google Translate in Gā (a language in 🇬🇭), but can be apply to other languages, especially “DDLs” that are added to Google Translate. You = “nyɛ” (Plural form) You = “o / bo” (Singular form) In Gā.

In the Bible, when Haman plotted to wipe out the Jews, Esther; who was queen, hesitated to speak up for her people. So Mordecai, her cousin and guardian, sent her a profound message recorded in Esther 4:13–14: ‘For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?’

South Omo Zone around Jinka hosts at least 16 indigenous ethnic groups, reflecting immense cultural diversity, though exact lists aren't exhaustively detailed in sources like Wikipedia. Prominent ones include Ari, Hamar, Karo, Mursi, Daasanach, Banna, Tsemay, Nyangatom, Arbore, and Me'en. Others encompass Male, Chai (Suri), Kwegu, Bashada, and Ongamo, each with distinct languages, pastoral or agro-pastoral lifestyles, and traditions shaped by the Omo Valley environment.

@hhpapazian @Affinity Great question! — so far I’m dealing with Kigelia and it’s all good: Kigelia Arabic, Kigelia (ADLaM, Ge’ez, etc) Need to test other fonts and see.

Creating an even visual rhythm between latin & Bassa letters has been a unique kerning experience. It's less mechanical vs kerning latin letters alone, my eyes worked overtime optically balancing each anomalous outer shape created by Bassa characters... refreshing🫠

We have almost succeeded in training machines to think and talk like us (humans). Now, we are in a hurry to catchup; learning how to speak to machines by thinking and talking like machines. #thinkingmachine #thinkinghuman

@hhpapazian I’ve heard this explanation before, and it does make sense when considering the higher living costs in certain cities compared to underserved regions. At the same time, though, it raises concerns about whether such reasoning unintentionally reinforces a monopoly dynamic.

@hhpapazian 3/3 Thoughtful balance is needed. Why not create scholarship packages for those underserved design communities? And still keep your incentive rates intact to sustain your institution’s growth and efforts?

@hhpapazian 2/2 While we know inclusion and intrinsic motivation inspires innovation, creativity, and diversification, we put all focus too much on incentive motives. Of course, incentives approach is needed to keep institutions moving forward and sustain efforts.

@tshumaosmond A musician contacted me last month and went ghost mode when the rate was sent to him. 🤭 I can share his handle with you so you give it a shot.
