@konstructivizm Escape velocity is 11.2km/s and they are approaching at 10.8km/s (24000mph)so its not possible to escape pmus the fist skip will slow them down anyway however badly the angles are? I think thats correct but im no expert

The Artemis 2 crew, returning from a lunar flyby, is doing something they've never done with people on board. Orion is flying at 40,000 km/h. At that speed, the atmosphere isn't air, it's a wall. You can't just dive down—the crew would be crushed by the G-forces, and the ship would burn up. So they came up with this idea. Orion will enter the atmosphere, heat up to 2800 degrees, and bounce back into space. Like a pebble bounces off water. Remember throwing flat stones down a river as a kid? Up there, it has a couple of minutes to cool down. Then it reenters and lands. The trick is that such a jump drops the G-forces from 10g to 4g. The difference between tolerable and done. The Apollo missions returned differently. They didn't jump, they simply glided through the upper atmosphere like a skier down a hill, gradually losing speed. One pass and that's it. It worked, but the G-forces were severe. The Soyuz reenters the ISS quite simply. Its speed is half that of Orion, and the atmosphere handles it in one pass. No tricks needed. But Orion arrives from the Moon. Different speed, different task. That's why they came up with this jump. But if the calculations are off even slightly, the rebound will throw the ship back into orbit, into space. There are no braking engines left. They'll simply wait for the Earth to pull them in. With a finite supply of oxygen. And if the rebound is even higher, they'll be blown off into space altogether. I hope everything goes perfectly...

@maitlis An angle - does Ratcliffe speak French? A lot of ex-pats dont seem to and I never particularly hear the Spanish moaning about it. The English are not renowned for their language abilities

@Teslaconomics Why wouldn't you use both? Lidar is now cheap. If humans had radar they would use it. Elon risks being late to his own party, because he's not now embracing cheap lidar, but that would be a very expensive retrofit across hundreds of thousands of vehicles

One of the funniest jokes in autonomy right now is the idea that Rivian is going to solve self-driving with LiDAR. James Philbin (Head of Autonomy) said “Adding lidar creates the ultimate sensing combination. It gives the most comprehensive 3D model of the space.” RJ Scaringe (CEO) said that their new hardware “will enable us to… deliver on our goal of delivering L4” with eyes-off, full autonomy to give us back our time. Rivian’s Timeline: • Early 2026: Hands free on highways (supervised) • Later 2026+: Point-to-point (FSD like) • End 2026 (R2): LiDAR + custom chips unlock eyes-off & full L4 path • Rivian says cameras alone can’t reliably handle edge cases. And that’s the tell. Tesla has been solving autonomy in the real world for years with millions of cars, billions of miles, constant data, constant iteration all WITHOUT LiDAR, all while Rivian is still laying out roadmaps and hoping the right sensor stack unlocks the future. Elon has been blunt about this from day one since Tesla Autonomy Day in 2019: “Anyone relying on LiDAR is doomed.” And his reasoning is honestly pretty simple. Humans drive with eyes and a brain, without lasers spinning on the roof. Vision scales. Data scales. Software scales. LiDAR does NOT. You will never beat Tesla by bolting on more hardware… and going the route that is clearly the wrong choice to solve real world autonomy. If I’m being honest here, I’d rather take home a HW3 Tesla running V12 today over a LiDAR dependent Rivian promise for 2026 every single day of the week. One is already doing the job and the other is still explaining why it needs more sensors. I really think Rivian is headed down the wrong path with LiDAR to compete against FSD. Time will tell.

@TheBDA @EddieCrouch Unlike gp practices, dental practice staff aside from the dentist don't get nhs mat leave or an nhs pension. This country does not deserve an nhs dental service. Its really that simple.

In the grand scheme of NHS spending fixing NHS Dentistry should be a reasonably achievable target. Most MPs of all parties that I meet want this fixed and buckets of water won’t put out the flames quickly enough
BDA@TheBDA

“So you’re saying we’re treating NHS dentistry as a ‘burning platform’, but we’ve only got buckets of water?” says @JoshFG MP. NHS dentistry has been described by Ministers as at 'death's door', as a 'burning platform'. We need a proportionate response to fund the rebuild.

@elonmusk nasa's budget is getting cut by 6 bil. I reckon you could make that up (i mean you wpuld barely notice it). Be good for science and publicity. I think stalks, Hud would also generate good +ve publicity for tesla. Just a suggestion from someone not that important!

@simoncove1 @Yamaxmeta @krassenstein @grok It makes no difference because our founders were well aware of larger weapons existing and that technology advances. Our navy was private citizens warships. The only 2 restrictions you'll get would be on NBC weapons and on convicted violent criminals owning them.

BREAKING: MAGA is flipping out as the Supreme Court just refused to hear a challenge to Maryland’s assault weapons ban and Rhode Island’s law to restrict large capacity magazines. This is huge win for the future of gun laws in America.

@Yamaxmeta @krassenstein @grok I think when the second was announced muskets were the primary weapon which take two mins to load a single shot. The right to bear arms is probably sensibly viewed as a bit of self defence as opposed to mowing down an entire school with a machine gun?

No that's not true. In the United States certainly at the time of 1791 which is when the US Supreme Court said we have to go back to text tradition in history there was no such thing as a restriction. I will be addressing what I hear about later because I haven't heard anything yet. Those cases have been pushed off 13 or 14 times. Their refusal to hear it may involve another case or two but you're too fucking stupid to know that possibility. But the fact is let's say they don't want to address the situation because they actually want gun control, well that would be violating their own ruling in 2022 unless you're going to suggest that they now repent of that decision in which case they could have simply taken the case and said so. You do know we're going to arrest you for treason right. I fucking promise it because I'm going to be behind that arrest when it happens. I promise you that. A civil war is coming and we're going to need all those guns. After all that's why we had an American revolution. To overthrow what tyrannical government and we have the right of rebellion if we have to do it or didn't you read the Declaration of Independence where it says that or any of the other founding fathers writings. I swear on my life you will be arrested and tried the treason and you don't want to be in my court because I don't believe in prison

@RoryStewartUK Do you know that nhs dentists get an nhs pension but unlike GP receptionists & nurses dental receptionists & nurses do not get an nhs pension. An emergency appt which can involve tooth extraction is £26. On what planet does anyone think this covers practice costs?

@denis_campbell I mean nhs dental practice makes up 90% of dentistry & the nurses & receptionists (unlike their gp counterparts) don’t get the nhs pension. It’s a disgrace. Let alone the mismanagement of the nhs contract which has not been altered to reflect work on for 20 years

@RoryStewartUK Dental contract is a farce and NHS actively promotes pay inequality and we & others are leaving or shutting NHS practices. BUPA shut 85 NHS practices last year-we can’t afford to stay open unless go private. They terribly have not reviewed pay bands since 2005🤷‍♂️

@RoryStewartUK NHS Dentistry has never been free at point of contact and to Alistair’s point, the cost to introduce GP payments would be negligible. Child under 18, pregnant woman and all other exemptions pay zero. NHS dentistry has never been free since 1948 NHS inception.
