RESPONSE TO RECENT POST I've recently been subjected to targeted harassment on X, making claims that are entirely untrue. This is deeply upsetting and stressful for me, my colleagues, and my family. I have reported the matter to Police Scotland and am now no longer active here.

May I propose this a rule of discourse: the making of solemn parallels between minor, annoying measures, health or otherwise, by well-meaning democratic governments AND the liquidation of the entire Jewish people in Europe by the Nazis aka the Holocaust displays crass insensitivity, bad taste, preposterous self-pity and mountainous, moronic ignorance. In a time when real history is constantly being distorted and misused, it cheapens it and justifies others to do so. Please stop doing it

@pol_eco_pub Fair points, and I’m definitely viewing it from a UK perspective. What hasn’t changed for me is any shift in what the large commercial players feel it’s appropriate to charge. It’s very frustrating that I can’t help invest in alternative platforms instead of share dividends.

@simonjbains Yes there are. Subscription cancellations for a start in many countries (and many Unis in the US), the continuous rise of preprints in many disciplines, the development of journal-independant peer review platforms. The UK has a big publishing industry hence its situation.

I'm heartened by growing levels of awareness and the support I hear from academic colleagues is way higher and louder than it was even 5 years ago (10 years ago it was pretty inaudible). But we need to see many more researchers up for being bold, and supported to do so. [12/12]
