I wish Meta clearly communicated this to developers years ago, but I guess it’s better late than never. In summary, they say the evidence supports 20-40 minutes as the ideal session length when considering the friction needed to get into VR and the weight/comfort levels of their present headsets. Implied is that they recognize that both friction (ease-of-use) and form-factor (size/weight/comfort) are the major factors limiting the floor and the ceiling of the ideal VR session. As ease-of-use improves (so much of this can be done in software, but some of it is hardware related), the 20 minute floor will decrease because the value needed to convince someone to put on the headset to start their session will be lower. As the form-factor and comfort improve, the 40 minute ceiling will increase because the headset will be less taxing to wear long term. None of this is necessarily novel, but A) they’re putting some real numbers to it, and B) developers who are new to VR won’t necessarily know this intuitively, so it’s good to have it out in the open. Over the last 12 months, Meta seems to be sharing more key platform knowledge with VR developers than ever, so that’s worth a 👏
