@prof_kozak I like Albin Zak's discussion of it in the introduction to Poetics of Rock - in the end he boils it down to Stravinsky's quote "The poetics of music is... about 'making' in the field of music". Understanding the 'doing' rather than the output of what is done. Small's 'Musicking'

@prof_kozak I agree that music theory helps us listen 'better' but as Ewell pointed out it highlights certain features and not others which makes it vital to find the right theory for the right music. Melodic or harmonic analysis can make rhythmically or timbrally complex music seem simple.
