“The claim that Japanese people killed every Chinese person they saw is nonsense. The Japanese followed rules properly.”
Testimony of a 96-year-old Chinese woman, video posted from Harbin on October 25, 2025.
Woman:
“The Japanese were here for 14 years. After they lost the war, they went back home. They left all their furniture and household items behind — tables, everything.
The idea that the Japanese killed people whenever they saw them — that never happened. That’s nonsense. You didn’t actually see it yourselves, did you?
If anything, China had all kinds of problems back then.”
Q:
“So what China is promoting now — that the Japanese killed people on sight — that wasn’t true?”
Woman:
“No, not at all.
I used to sit together with Yang Si’s son and other children on the heated platform (kang). Boys and girls played together. Then a high-ranking Japanese official came in and started taking photos of the children.
I suddenly realized I was sitting next to a boy in the photo and got embarrassed, so I ran off.
They never killed Chinese people just for being seen. That didn’t happen.
The Japanese followed rules.”
Q:
“Grandma, where were you born? Around this neighborhood?”
Woman:
“Yes. I was born very close to where the Japanese lived.
After the Japanese repatriated, we moved into their houses. They had lost the war and left, so we started living in Japanese homes.”
Q:
“The Japanese did terrible things, didn’t they?”
Woman:
“Well… the Japanese followed rules.
It’s not true that they only did bad things. People say everything bad about the Japanese, but listen — they stayed here for 14 years, and when they left after the war, they left all their belongings behind.
Everyone rushed to take them because the quality was so good — tables, furniture, everything.
But killing people? No.
The Japanese followed rules.
The idea that they killed everyone they saw is completely made up.”
(Note: “kang” is a heated platform used in northern China for warmth.)
