First detected in 2012, MERS has a fatality rate of approximately 36% and is related to the virus that causes COVID-19.

Saudi Arabia has reported five MERS-CoV cases in 2023, resulting in four deaths, with the last case on May 8. Since 2012, there have been 2,205 cases globally, mostly in Saudi Arabia.

The man had no contact with camels and is not a healthcare worker. Follow-up investigations by Saudi and Pakistani health officials revealed no secondary cases among his close contacts.

After being discharged from the hospital, the man traveled to Pakistan on September 2 before receiving his MERS test result. He was later found in Pakistan and transferred to a hospital for isolation. He was discharged on September 13 after testing negative.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Health reports a new MERS case in a man aged 50-55 from the Eastern Region. He showed symptoms on August 28, was hospitalized on August 31, and tested positive on September 4.
