If I was designing a KS3 curriculum now I think I'd try to consciously do it around APPROACHES. I'd explicity structure each half term / term of Y7 and Y8 around exploring a different way of reading.

rewordify.com is an excellent website: copy and paste any text & it will identify the tier two vocabulary. From this, the site can generate a glossary, multiple choice quizzes & more. For example:
