We need to see the Syrian people getting back to their homes safely

As we commemorate the 8th anniversary of the Afrin occupation, I take some solace in the return of families to the city. But most are returning to looted homes. As Syrians, we must ensure together that justice is done and Afrin’s future security is guaranteed.

My dear brother Heval Salih Muslim was an inspirational revolutionary and a monumental figure. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, as well as the Kurdish people in northeast Syria (Rojava) and to all Kurds everywhere. Heval Salih Muslim never tired in the pursuit of the just cause of the Kurdish people. He always said that Kurds must stand united and speak with one voice. He believed in the struggle for freedom and the importance of civil resistance. The passing of Heval Salih Muslim is a great loss but we are confident that his revolutionary ideas will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in peace. #firstladyofiraq

My condolences to the family and comrades of the honorable Mr. Saleh Muslim @SalehMaslem. His wise insights were greatly valued by me and many U.S. government officials. He was committed to peace in Syria and freedom from oppression. Born in Kobani, he was a political and intellectual leader for Kurds in Syria. Still really in shock about the death of Salih Muslim — last meeting with him in November. He was in a great mood and we had a good talk about Kurdish options. He was a key civilian activist/leader in the movement Ocalan built & that dominated Kurdish activities in Rojava.

We extend our sincere condolences on the passing of Kurdish activist Salih Muslim. He dedicated his life to defending the rights, dignity, and aspirations of the Kurdish people. His passing is a great loss, but his legacy will remain part of the ongoing struggle for justice and peace. Our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the Kurdish people. 🕊️

بعد أكثر من 8 سنوات من التهجير القسري، عودة أهالي عفرين إلى ديارهم تمثل خطوة مهمة نحو استعادة الحق والعدالة. عفرين لأهلها، وعودة سكانها الأصليين حق طبيعي يجب أن يُصان، مع ضرورة إنهاء الانتهاكات وضمان عودة آمنة وكريمة لجميع المهجرين في سوريا .

Returns of IDPs to Afrin have begun. “They cut down all our trees; they were like our children!" one returnee said. “Is there anyone who doesn’t want to return to their home? We’ve been away for 8 years. Trees are like a person’s children. The Amshad (Sultan Sulaiman Shah) group was in our home. They cut down all our trees! We have nothing left! Efrîn is still not safe, Kurds are not safe In Rojava, thousands of Kurds have been kidnapped, detained, displaced, martyred Today in Cindirês, occupied Efrîn, Murad, Ahmed, Muhammed were killed by Turkish backed mercenaries (Syrian Army) And people still ask why Kurds demand autonomy Because autonomy means the right to live on our land with dignity
Because autonomy means our children, women are not kidnapped
Because autonomy means our people are not murdered without justice They speak about the return of Efrîn’s displaced people, but where are the guarantees? Who will protect them? Who will hold the killers accountable?

On International Women’s Day, we salute the courage and leadership of Kurdish and all the women who have been at the forefront of the struggle for freedom, equality, and peace .Their role in defending their communities and building a more democratic and inclusive Syria is indispensable. #WomensDay2026
