Uber needed them to prove that people would get in a stranger's car.. that was the experiment.. > Today Uber just announced a $1.25 billion investment in Rivian to build a robotaxi fleet.. $1.25 billion.. not to pay drivers more.. not to give them benefits.. to replace them entirely.. > every driver who worked 14 hour shifts.. who skipped weekends with their kids.. who kept their rating above 4.8 so they wouldn't get deactivated.. they were proving the model works.. they were building the demand.. they were showing Uber exactly where people go, when they go, and how much they'll pay.. and now that the demand is proven and the data is collected.. Uber just launched an entire division called "AV Labs" to collect driving data for robotaxis..
