@TeeJayTheory @valvesoftware @Steam I mean, billions of people spend hours every single day holding a corpo metal or plastic rectangle. Do gamepads really even need to be ergonomic? Smartphones aren't.
English

@valvesoftware @Steam Why is it shaped like a brick? This looks like it will be kinda trash to hold in the hands.
That’s just my first impression. Maybe it feels better than it looks, but I don’t have high hopes!
English

Excited to announce our @Steam Controller arrives on Steam May 4th at 10 a.m. PT.

@wfaaweather Nah, survival of the strong. If they die it wasn't meant to be.
English

@wfaaweather Sounds like this one may not fizzle out like Friday / Saturday due to the cap.
English

@lostinininind @SadlyItsBradley They punch above their weight but in terms of number of employees (about 350) they are dwarfed by Nintendo (about 8,200). And Nintendo is dwarfed by the others I mentioned. Very different scale.
I think the AI PC parts apocalypse has seriously loused up what they wanted to do...
English

@sinuous_grace @SadlyItsBradley 1/20th the size of Nintendo? That seems aggressively undercutting them. I can't say for certain they're as large but in terms of raw cash flow they're certainly in that ballpark.
Absolutely large enough to be making deals for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of parts.
English

Valve has publicly announced. They still plan to release their new hardware in “the first half of this year”
But are unwilling to announce anything more than that, due to memory and storage shortage problems

English

@lostinininind @SadlyItsBradley I wouldn't call Valve large. They're about 1/20th the size of Nintendo. Nintendo is about 1/20th the size of the big companies (Meta, MS, Apple, nVidia, Amazon, Samsung, Sony, Google).
The 400% spike in consumer RAM prices in mere months has most definitely affected their plans.
English

@sinuous_grace @SadlyItsBradley I mean Micron's consumer exit doesn't effect a large company like Valve. They'll probably have a bit of a price hike, but a long term delay or full cancellation? No way.
English

@valvesoftware @Steam Thank you for at least updating us. I hope the Steam Frame still gets released eventually even if it's a very limited one-and-done production run at $1,500 for the enthusiasts.

English

@valvesoftware @Steam You should really put something out there. It has been 82 days of complete radio silence. No update on any software, dev, regulatory, manufacturing, logistical, legal, or pats sourcing issues. No update on when a pre-order / reservation date might even be announced.
English

@SadlyItsBradley This was used sometimes in Tad Williams' VR series Otherland. Subvocalization.
English

I use speech to text on headsets more than any other device. But it’s awkward to do around others. The fix:
Apple acquired Q.AI, a startup whose technology can analyze facial micro-movements to interpret "silent speech," in a deal valued at close to $2 billion
English

@Okami13_ Is the system AI-based? LLM-based? I'm not opposed to that (I think it could be cool + immersive to have a decent LLM powering individual NPCs with distinct personalities / motivations / somewhat open-ended conversation potential), I'm really just curious. Sounds good either way.

New Judas preview:
▫️ Ken Levine's most reactive game yet
▫️ Decide exactly how to proceed with the story, who to trust, and how to deal with the consequences
▫️ Characters will respond to your exact sequence of actions "down to the smallest detail"
▫️ This system took 5 years of R&D to develop
▫️ The 'Villainy' feature is a system where depending on how you act towards characters they could hate you, like you, then hate you again
▫️ Due to the Villainy system it's impossible to please everyone - one of the characters will become your antagonist
▫️ "We’re really eager to see players experience that and see which of our characters become fan favorites"
▫️ They wanted to build a 'Judas simulator' and really place you in the character's shoes
▫️ Levine says development is progressing well and the team is heads down on their next milestone
▫️ They recently dropped a dev blog with more to come soon - "Then, as we approach launch, you can expect trailers among other announcements"

@IpecacRec I always turn music off from the start because it's more immersive that way. Never heard this before.
English

@wfaaweather What fun would unfollowing be? If he did that, he wouldn't get to bitch and moan and complain.
English

@wfaaweather Huh?? My wife assured me 4 inches was massive. We should be scared.
English

@wfaaweather My cousin lives in St. Cloud, MN. Here are their HI temps: Friday -11, Saturday -3, Sunday 2, Monday 9, Tuesday 6, Wednesday 4, Thursday 3.
Wind chills with LO temps are indecent to even post here. (HINT: Celsius and Fahrenheit are the same number!)
I think we'll be alright.
English

@wfaaweather As long as your car has enough rear-wheel torque you can just power through this, right?
English

@ZeroStateReflex I don't know, down south there can be a lot of being trapped together in the AC in the summer. Imagine it's 109 for the high and still 95 at 10:30 at night. 5am overnight lows of 84 degrees for multi-week spans. Back to over 90 by 9am.
English

@benz145 But if I'm understanding correctly, doing so could upset the tracking.

#1 Speaking to the acoustics engineer (also largely responsible for Index's legendary headphones:
"We're not announcing anything. But we do understand that there's a lot of people that are very happy with Index style of audio... and I think we're gonna, you know, continue to think about that."
The engineer at this point was literally winking while saying this... the implication I got was that they are considering making an official Frame headstrap accessory with Index-like headphones. Or at very least they might release some kind of adapter that would let the Index headstrap/headphones attach (or maybe they'd just release the CAD files for an adapter so it could be 3D printed or manufactured by another party).
