I am slightly sad and tired with no real reason.
I realised is the after play drop.
After very intense play and emotional connection, the return to everyday life can feel unexpectedly difficult. During scenes, the brain is flooded with dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, adrenaline. The entire nervous system enters an emotionally open, deeply connected, hyper-present state.
Then suddenly it is over, and normal life resumes.
I am in a long-term relationship with poodle. We see each other every day. We are close, secure and connected. Yet even then, after particularly intense experiences, I can still feel this emotional shift afterwards. A strange melancholy.
This becomes even harder for couples who physically separate after play, and it is often more intense for the receiving partner because they remain in an emotionally vulnerable and chemically heightened state for longer.
People often think that the drop must look dramatic, but many times it is subtle: low energy, unexpected sadness, emotional sensitivity, difficulty reconnecting with ordinary reality, or simply feeling off “without a reason.”
This is normal while the nervous system is recalibrating after profound intimacy and intensity.
It is important to me to normalise this emotional openness instead of hiding it behind strength all the time.
