The students sing for the Offertory of today’s Ascension Thursday Mass. The Blessed Virgin Mary’s love and union with Christ were so profound that her “heart and soul” were effectively with Him in heaven while she remained to support the apostles. The Gloria is sung for the first time since the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, marking a moment of joy. This reflects the celebration of the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and the priesthood. Once the Gloria ends, all bells fall silent and remain so until the Gloria is sung again at the Easter Vigil. The organ and other musical instruments are also restricted. In place of bells, a wooden clapper (called a crotalus or matraca in some regions) is used.
