On behalf of many passionate South African football fans, I call for a comprehensive review of our relegation and promotion laws. The current system is degrading the quality of the Betway Premiership and protecting mediocrity. Clubs like Chippa United have survived for over a decade despite consistently poor seasons simply because the league only relegates one team directly. Position 15 has become a comfort zone — teams know they only need to avoid 16th place, then face weaker opponents in a playoff. This must end. My Proposal for a more competitive and inclusive PSL: 1.Relegation: The bottom three teams (14th, 15th & 16th) in the Betway Premiership should be automatically relegated with no playoffs. If a club has shown over a full season that it is not good enough for the top tier, it should not get a second chance to "bully" lower-division sides to survive. 2.Promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship (NFD): With three spots opening up, we create real opportunity and inclusion: ¤ 1st and 2nd — Direct promotion to the PSL. ¤ 3rd to 6th — Play two-legged semi-final playoffs. ¤ Winners of the semis contest the Final. ¤ The Final winner earns the 3rd promotion spot. This gives the top 6 clubs in the NFD a genuine chance to reach the top flight — not just one or two. Why this benefits South African football: 1. Clubs in the PSL will fight harder every week (no more hiding at 15th). 2. Stronger competition and higher standards across the board. 3.Greater inclusion and fairness for ambitious NFD clubs. 4.A more exciting, merit-based league that can truly become an African powerhouse.
