i worked at the city library and the county golf course through high school
i quit shortly after the head librarian retired and was replaced by the city’s first ever holder of a Master’s of Library Science, a fresh graduate. her main concern was making sure patrons stopped calling anyone but her a “librarian”
then she culled the collection of every book published before 1813 [anything older than pride & prejudice wasn’t needed, the library needed to ‘modernize’]. a giant public sale was planned, 20¢ per book. a small group of us bought every last one before the doors even opened, and donated them all to the library. the Librarian was furious. half the staff resigned by about a month after that, the library was temporarily closed, the city flipped out, and she was finally ousted. most of the resigned staff came back. the whole ordeal was a fever dream. i still keep in touch with Barb, the old timer who led the coup, she’s still at the library, been there 39 years!! she says they joke about 1813 all the time and how insane the whole thing was and how they don’t have a single Librarian yet
one time working at the golf course alice
cooper invited me to play a round with him and his bassist. he is very good at golf and was even nicer, and he thanked me for not doing the “we’re not worthy” thing by giving me four backstage passes to his show that night. i thanked him by first saying thank you and then by showing him where in a golf cart’s motor to shove a golf ball to shut the governor off

@tiredmommy1010 there was plenty of shelf space, she arbitrarily decided on a cutoff year, she couldn’t have cared less about circulation data. she was a Blight and a Disgrace on our city
English

@sk_ler If the books she weeded weren't circulating, she was right to pull them. They are taking up valuable shelf space if no one is reading them. And where I live, you can't be a librarian without an MLIS. There is respect for the position - and a healthy salary to match.

@zappycurrentbro seriously, i couldn’t agree more StaticSurferBrah. and that people went along with it just because “she has a degree in library Science!!!!!!!! she must be onto somethin!!!!!” was so unreal. but taught many good life lessons for high school me

one more of the funniest pages i've ever read. "struck out to sea again -- destination unknown" paired with these photos is 10/10

There've been a handful of works of fiction that had profound effects on my dreams while reading them and for a bit after. And most of 'em ain't the fiction I spent the most time consciously thinking about. I've written all my dreams down for over ten years, and the patterns that emerge over time are very curious, esp with things that have an asymmetric impact [or non-impact] in Dream Land. Idk:
- The Count of Monte Cristo
- The Book of the New Sun
- Aeneid
- Beezlebub's Tales to His Grandson
- Dubliners
- The Lies of Locke Lamora
- The Land Breakers
- Wrath of the Wendigo
- Ender's Game
- Strangers (koontz)
- Moby Dick
- Hard to Be a God

iPhone 5s was the best design ergonomically. Perfect size to reach across the screen with one thumb, no camera bulge, fingerprint sensor, nice materials, and 33% lighter than the latest iPhone 17 Air.
