The irony of a studio making a game that’s all about embracing what it means to be a human just to end up catering to AI is not lost on me

Oh, that's the creators of Lies of P specifically hiring an AI artist to work on their next game 😕

Sony is a 122 Billion dollar company. With some of the most advanced tech in the world.
They have a Data Platform that can process up to 760 terabyte's from over 500 types of datasets to track engagement metrics, including user retention.

SO when Sony's CFO says they're happy with player retention and some dork on twitter decides to post Steam Charts and go, "NU UH LOOOOOOK!" Remember that Sony uses a fucking Data Platform that can process up to 760 terabyte's from over 500 types of datasets to track engagement metrics, including user retention.
Also STORY TIME. in 2008 Sony took a 2 Billion dollar loss because they had to subsidize the PS3 in hopes of long term market revenue. It nearly crippled their gaming division, but they wanted to win the Format war against Toshibas HD-DVD. Sony didn't even deem the PS3 a success until 3-4 years after its launch. But it paid off. Blue Ray became the Industry standard and the PS3 is regarded as a success despite its launch, selling more units than the Xbox 360 even though the 360 was 200-300 dollars less. Pixel Playback has a great video going over this.

My point is that Sony is no stranger when it comes to taking risk in order to better their future. It's Kind of the thing they do. Its also kind of the thing Bungie does.
Sony's Primary reason, for buying Bungie was because they Saw Destiny as Best in Class for Live service games and they wanted that level of expertise.

yes the 768 million dollar impairment loss is scary for anyone who is a Bungie fan and wants their games to succeed. I'd also imagine its terrifying for the People working at Bungie considering how unstable job stability seems to be in the industry and really hope everyone working at Bungie is doing okay.
However I do not believe Sony is looking as much to the short term success. Which is why in the Earnings report they highlight that Marathon overall has a high rating as a game and that retention is also really good. They're probably hoping to see Marathons player base slowly grow over time because the game is genuinely really fucking fun and if you invest into it and really learn and play it I consider it to be one of the best feeling FPS games out.
That's why I believe Marathon isn't going anywhere (for right now). Sony seems to be more focused on its long term success and we really wont know the future of Marathon, Destiny or Bungie for that matter for another 1-3 years.
TLDR: No U

Sony CFO Lin Tao says earnings from Bungie did not meet expectations, but player reception to Marathon has been strong and they will continue to support it!
“In our studio business, earnings from Bungie's title portfolio did not reach our expectations, so we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie except for goodwill.
Player reception to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90% of the player reviews on Steam being positive. Engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level.
Going forward, we aim to improve the performance of the game by working to retain highly engaged core users through the introduction of additional content, further improvements in the gameplay experience and expansion of the user base.”

@Ziegler_Dev Not sure if this is one of the things being looked at, but as the Biotoxic disinjector becomes more common, we are finding more games where people who have it clear out all of cryo using it, it does not feel like theres any counter play, especially the grenade launcher

(update about an update: we have some iterations / big balance changes brewing right now and will talk about it soon)
but... OFF TOPIC: I feel like as a kid of the 90s and a person who's worked on PVP FPS games for over a decade, I may have taken the first two lines of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" too much to heart.

Marathon is being so slept on by the FPS community.
It's been really interesting as a content creator, hearing directly from viewers that they refuse to watch because they can’t get past the polarizing visuals to understand that this is truly one of the best feeling FPS experiences in years with tight gunplay, insane tension (genuinely has my heart beating out my chest) and a gameplay loop that actually rewards skill and decision making.
But I think that's also the games biggest problem. People like to bash the art style but really I think it's that PvP games just don’t stick like they used to. They’re harder to get into, harder to watch, and don’t have broad, instant appeal. If it’s not immediately accessible or visually “safe” people bounce.
So Marathon ends up overlooked, not because it’s bad (it's great) but because it’s different at a time when most players just want familiar.
*It's also crazy that Bungie took such a huge risk on a niche game with a niche art style for such a niche demographic so I can understand where the negativity is coming from as far as gamers wanting more than just "another extraction shooter" but they made a damn good one and I hope more people give it a chance.
