World Citizen
by Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian
Listen: lnk.to/worldcitizenpl…
"World Citizen" originated from a musical chain letter project launched by Sakamoto in March, 2003.
At that time, he said:
"When the US invaded Iraq, I felt that I had to advocate peace over war, so I started this little web project. Even though the 100,000-plus Iraqi civilians and the 3,000-plus US military lives lost to date can't be brought back, I want to keep this project alive and open until the war has ended, until peace comes to Iraq".
The purpose was to "musically mark the passage of time that Iraq is in a state of war, to mark the steps to peace, to take each day that there is war and build a musical memorial to the desire for peace as well as to mark off the time of war."
Ryuichi reached out to David to join the project by contributing lyrics.
"My immediate response to the piece was to repeat two lines at the heart of the composition, one of which was the phrase' World Citizen'. The title resonated in a simple way. A necessary redirection of focus away from the national towards the global."
.
"World Citizen" has gone on to take many forms and remixes:
"World Citizen" (World Citizen EP, 2003)
"World Citizen - I Won't Be Disappointed" (World Citizen EP, 2003)
"World Citizen - Ryoji Ikeda Remix" (World Citizen EP, 2003)
"World Citizen - I won't be disappointed / looped piano" (CHASM, 2004)
"World Citizen/re-cycled" (CHASM, 2004)
"World Citizen - Taylor Deupree Remix" (Bricolages, 2006)
"World Citizen I Won't Be Disappointed - Hildur Guðnadóttir Remodel" (A Tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto - To the Moon and Back, 2022)
