The Vision Zero crash analysis data dashboard does not yet explicitly explain the 2021 change, although it now acknowledges that injury data definitions may change over time. So, be wary future D.C. traffic data analysts.

City officials initially pointed to dropping major injury numbers as an indication of some success. But that drop, our data analysis uncovered, was because of a data definition change — loss of teeth and possible internal injury are no longer considered major injuries.
