Growing up, I noticed a pattern, and it’s something very relatable. You see it with a lot of people, especially those born in the 1980s, early 90s, and so on. When they tell you a story about their parents, it often goes like this: “My father used to work in one of these reputable companies, he was doing well, he was well paid, and he was able to help people around him.” And after some time, things began to go south. That was how he got retired, and nothing really much happened after that. Then the person telling the story is born, and they find their family in a position where things are not really working so well. You hear that story a lot. I can relate to it, I am part of that story.
My father used to work for Guinness Company, I think between the late 70s and early 80s. He was doing well, able to help people around him. My uncle was the secretary to Ambrose Alli, not just a staff member, a direct secretary. But all this affluence did not extend to me because it didn’t stand the test of time. These people fell off. They didn’t have solid stability, it was all short-term, everything fragile, filled with envy, and trying to compete or pull each other down. In the long run, most of those things did not last.
That is why I talk so much about stability. Stability is being able to take care of yourself, your family, and extend that to the people close to you. Stability is moving from just surviving to something that can be sustained. That way, when your kids come, they are not starting from survival, they start from somewhere higher, somewhere close to stability.
I didn’t have that growing up. I had to go to the farm at least three times a day if I wanted to feed three times a day, I mean most times. It was not fun, it was hard, it was hell. We had to do things other kids our age were not supposed to do or encouraged to do because the environment we were in demanded it. During planting season, we had to water tomatoes in the morning before leaving for school, wake up as early as 5 a.m., work for an hour, maybe more, then rush home to get ready for school. By 7:30 or 7:45, we were running to school to at least arrive at school before 8 or few minutes late, sometimes getting lashes for being late. If it was yam planting season, we did that too. You gats plant yam before you go school.
On top of that, we often had to help other people work in their farms to earn something. Life was constant labor, constant survival. During harvest seasons, most times going to market on market days before returning home to prepare for school. Lateness was normal. But you know what? We still managed to dominate in our classes. My siblings were very intelligent, our struggle couldn't take that away from us.
I know many people can relate with my story. Thinking back, I realized that if my parents had achieved just a little stability, I wouldn’t have had to start life in survival mode. It's in the past now, I don't have to continue blaming them, they tried. Besides, they gave us EDUCATION which is something I'm grateful for. Now, it's my turn to build mine.
This is the reason I encourage young people to strive for stability. Even a little goes a long way. It means when your kids come, they can go to good schools, study courses or do the things they are passionate about, and focus on their talents instead of fighting to survive. They can become doctors, nurses, pursue education, migrate if they want to, chase dreams that you and I didn’t have the luxury to chase because everything we did as children was just about surviving. Omo, story long but man no be story teller.
Stability is about building something that lasts, even if it’s small. Investments, businesses, properties, a little money saved that creates a foundation. That way, the next generation doesn’t have to fight just to exist, they can fight for their passion. That is why I keep repeating it: stability!!! My pinned tweet says it all. It matters, it changes everything, and it gives the people coming after you a chance to start above survival. You gats try, Bro.
