I think people who are afraid of getting a pap smear also most probably do know that its a screening method for cancer but that doesn't erase the fear of having a device inserted into your vagina so im not sure what this convo is even about

See, the problem is everything in gynecology is a fucking torture device and no one is addressing the fact that none of it should be. I remember reading about this as a CHILD thinking it didn’t need to be so fucking invasive and painful.

Seems like pap smear discourse is happening again. As a medical physicist I have had to observe cervical brachytherapy during my research on cervical cancer. This treatment involves a metal rod being placed through the cervix and into the uterus, often with additional needles inserted into the cervical tissue acting as additional radiation channels. For some tumours, this device is left inside the patient for 1-2 days to deliver a low dose of radiation slowly. This is horrifying to watch, and more horrifying to experience. Nothing is worse than cancer. Please get your smear test.

hi, medical and women's historian here: women's fear of pap smears, as well as their fear of vaginal exams, is beyond reasonable. gynecology has been rife with misogyny for centuries, the "father of modern gynecology" practiced on slaves w/o anesthesia. don't ridicule other women
