Leona Tate's testimony is the line that deserves to travel. She desegregated a New Orleans school at six years old. Walked through a mob to do it. Now 71, she stood in a Louisiana hearing room this week to testify against maps designed to eliminate Black congressional representation in her state. "I walked through that mob once," she said. "I feel like I'm still walking through it." The maps she's testifying against are the direct product of a ruling that relied on turnout data experts called deliberately misleading, issued by justices who built the legal architecture of this moment over four decades. The states were waiting for clearance. They moved within hours. Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, South Carolina - all at once. Protesters removed from chambers. A senator standing on her desk. The four Black congressmen Louisiana has produced since the 1870s, all in the same room. "We shall overcome" sung inside a statehouse, in 2026.
