South Melbourne FC has appointed Peter Smith as the club's Boys Youth Technical Director. Smith joins the club after working closely with South Melbourne FC during the club's recent OFC Professional League campaign. He relocates to Australia with his family after three successful seasons with New Zealand National League club Bay Olympic FC, where he served as Men's Premier Head Coach and Senior Technical Director. There are some things that never really leave you as you grow older. For me, South Melbourne FC or Hellas as it known, is one of them. I still remember being a kid yelling and screaming in support of them. As a young first generation Australian of Greek descent, I remember the pride in being associated with the club and all that came with it, the noise, the colour, the drama and the sense that this club stood for something bigger than football. It was identity, community, pride. You didn’t just support Hellas, you were a part of it. So to now be joining the board of this great club, a club steeped in Australian football royalty is something I don’t take lightly. This club has shaped so much of Australian football, producing some of the game’s greats such as Oscar Crino, Paul Trimboli, Paul Wade, Francis Awaritefe, and of course Ange Postecoglou. Individuals who didn’t just represent a club but helped define an era of the sport in this country. This is a passion project for me. A chance to give back to something that has given me so much over my formative years. I’m stepping into this role with enormous respect for the leadership already in place. Bill Papastergiadis and Andrew Mesourouni have set a standard that speaks for itself and may never be passed. I have a lot to learn from them, from my fellow board members and from the dedicated staff, players (men, women and juniors) and fans who drive this club forward every day. What I can promise is simple. I’ll give everything I have to support the continued success of South Melbourne FC, on and off the pitch. South Melbourne FC is delighted to announce the signing of Australian Youth International Richard Nkomo for the remainder of the 2026 season. Nkomo joins the club from Newcastle Jets, having also previously featured for Western Sydney Wanderers, while representing Australia at both Under-17 and Under-18 level. A left-footed player, Nkomo is capable of playing on either side of defence or further up the wing. Blessed with pace and excellent technical ability, he is comfortable taking on defenders, creating opportunities for teammates and delivering dangerous balls into the box.
