Tri-Unity Christian and Portland St. Patrick stayed within 4 points of each other throughout the 1st half with a couple of lead changes and a few ties. St. Patrick took a 14-11 lead into halftime. St. Patrick got 3s from Lily Sandborn and Gracelyn Rockey sandwiched around a Tri-Unity FG to build a 20-13 lead early in the 3rd, but Tri-Unity scored 11 straight to turn the tide in their favor at 24-20. St. Patrick then scored 6 in a row to take the lead back but Tri-Unity got a FG and a late FT to take a 27-26 edge into the 4th. St. Patrick held Tri-Unity scoreless for 3+ minutes to start the 4th as they went on an 8-pt run to go up 34-27. The margin stayed between 5 and 7 the rest of the way as St. Patrick played patient offensively, made it difficult for Tri-Unity to get good looks defensively, and hit enough FTs to seal it down the stretch. St. Patrick wins an exciting defensive battle 38-32. Jr Gracelyn Rockey (pictured, #3) was aggressive and physical offensively and defensively, ripping away rebounds and playing through contact on her way to the rim, in leading St. Patrick with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 steals. Fr Macie Leonard scored half of St. Patrick's 14 1st half points and hit some key FTs late to add 10 points, while sr Lily Sandborn chipped in 8 more. Sr Montcalm Community College recruit Izzy Mojica hit a pair of 3s and scored 10 of her team-high 11 in Tri-Unity Christian's big 3rd qtr. Fr Molly Dumond flew all over the court swooping in for rebounds and picking up loose balls, posting a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 5 points and 3 steals. 6' jr Bekah Schmitz added 6 points and 6 rebounds in the post, and soph Lily Rowlader contributed 6 assists and 7 rebounds from the PG position. . Unofficial Stats: For @PortlandStPats : Jr @GracelynRo9459 (5'7" W) w/ 16p-8r-7s Fr Macie Leonard (5'6" W) w/ 10p Sr Lily Sandborn (5'5" G) w/ 8p-4r . Why Coaching Is Harder Than People Think (A Holiday Reminder)… Because coaching isn’t just about plays, drills, or game nights. It’s about people. It’s about walking into practice every day and managing emotions you didn’t create but are responsible for. Your own. Your players. Your assistants. Parents. Administrators. Fans. It’s about teaching kids who are all at different stages. Different maturity levels. Different confidence levels. Different home situations. And somehow holding them to the same standards while still meeting them where they are. It’s about decisions that look simple from the stands but feel heavy from the sideline. Who plays. When. Why. How you communicate it. And how that decision might land on a 16-year-old who ties their identity to minutes. It’s about losing sleep over kids who won’t buy in. Over conversations you need to have. Over mistakes you replay in your head long after everyone else moved on. It’s about being judged by people who see the outcome, not the process. The scoreboard, not the hours. The result, not the relationships. And yet, you show up again. You plan. You teach. You model. You care. As the season slows and the holidays arrive, this is the reminder: What you do matters. Even when it goes unseen. Even when it feels heavy. Even when it’s hard. Coaching is about influence. And influence lasts longer than any season. That’s why coaching is harder than people think. And also why it matters so much. As the year winds down, I hope you find a little rest, a little perspective, and a lot of pride in the work you’re doing. 🎄Happy Holidays, Coach.
