#whaspoilers being bel's student is the only social cred qifrey has. part of the reason why i think qifrey's confrontation with engendale was interesting is because engendale is a former wise one and still loses. imo he only lost because underestimated qifrey.

#whaspoilers one thing i love about olly/qifrey's dynamic is olly had all the classic traits of the main character. witch society views him as a child prodigy, upbeat, heroic, talented + famous. when they were kids his panels really give shonen mc.

i get it’s a hard sell, especially in the animanga space where shipping is a large part of how people engage despite it not really being textually apparent on the page…but wha being queer is non-negotiable, and if you think it’s negotiable it’s a gap in your literacy, no shade

people who insist queer art is straight, people who assume fan readings are canon, and people who resist queer expression beyond an easy/palatable view of “representation,” all reveal larger literacy gaps in how queerness is viewed in art.

i’m 100% confident on witch hat atelier being queer. it’s a non-negotiable part of the text that’s not only in the plot itself, it’s inseparable from the larger allegories it presents.

how olly sticks by him, stuck in a loop of almost making it through to him..... you can tell how much they crave it by the home they live in and the students they welcome inside it. it makes me think about the families in wha and the ways they've had to adapt.

y'know i'm 100% sure arkco is endgame but this newest chapter convinced me there's more to orufrey too. qifrey's arc reads very queer to me - the world he lives in stripped him of his autonomy, his ability to be truly himself, experience unrepressed romantic and familial love.

it'll all be fun and games until we get to the end of witch hat atelier in 15 years and we find out magic is the embodiment of gay love.......which you know is true if your soul is pure and you read without heterosexual delusion. tbf!

i kind of think orufrey and arkco are compelling so early into their arcs because you can tell they're on a nuclear trajectory that will kill you dead in a decade
