Kaz hated a puzzle he couldn’t solve, and he and Inej had concocted a hundred theories to account for the murder – none of which satisfied. But they had more pressing problems tonight.

“Maybe the Shu are done being friendly,” said Jesper. “They didn’t have to send all that treasure at once. You think they stuck that trade ambassador?”

“Jurda parem is real, Nina, and if you’re still the good little Grisha soldier I think you are, you’ll want to hear what it does to people like you.”

Inej gave Nina’s hand a brief squeeze, and after a moment, Nina squeezed back.

Her vision was blurring, but she could make out a pale, shiny scar on Kaz’s neck, right beneath his jaw.

Next to him Kaz looked … well, seventeen.

Per Haskell had bought out her indenture. He’d freed her.

When her fingers made contact with the stone, she hissed in a breath. Even through the leather, she could feel the dense heat of the bricks.

Inej gestured to a pair of big metal doors set into what looked like a giant chimney that jutted out from the wall and stretched all the way up to the ceiling. “I think they ran the incinerator this afternoon.”

“I have uniforms for the stadwatch, the harbour police, and the livery of every merch mansion on the Geldstraat. Let’s go.”

When the week was over, they’d walked hand in hand to the coffeehouse.

“Let go of me, Nina.” His gravel-rough voice was low, but she sensed real menace in it.
