The #PremierLeague this season is on track to record the lowest league imbalance* going back to 2017/18. After several seasons of very high title-winning points totals and clearly tiered groups in the top half of the league, this season shows a much more even points distribution. *Metric explainer in the quoted post 📊

Very good point! We can compute the Gini coefficient for the most imbalanced final standings possible: 1st team wins all matches, 2nd team wins all except against the 1st, and so on until the last team (zero points). For a 20-team league, this would yield a Gini coefficient of 35%, which we can use to normalize the numbers shown before, obtaining an inequality index with more intuitive values👇

#Inter and #Juventus face off in an exciting Derby d'Italia tomorrow evening in #SerieA 🇮🇹. Despite the Nerazzurri holding a 12-point advantage over their rivals, the two teams seem quite evenly matched when we look at coach-level data rather than raw season aggregates. #Spalletti has been able to turn #Juve around, greatly improving their underlying performance both with and without the ball compared to earlier in the season under #Tudor. In attack, Juventus almost match Inter's scoring rate from open play and narrowly surpass their underlying xG thanks to a higher shot volume. Inter retain an edge in production from high turnovers and set pieces. Stylistically, Inter rely more on crosses, while Juventus rely more on dribbling. Defensively, the two teams are evenly matched in open play, with Juventus conceding slightly fewer shots but of higher average quality, and Inter proving more solid against counters and high turnovers. Stylistically, Inter show higher pressing intensity (PPDA) and efficiency (BDP), while Juventus have higher counterpressing efficiency.

How do #Spurs underlying number in the #PremierLeague compare from this season to the previous one? Our data shows a significant dip in attacking production from open play, with the team ranking very low on both shot volume and average chance quality, only partially offset by increased production from set pieces. Off the ball, there is a signifcant improvement in most underlying metrics, with reduced pressing intensity and efficiency. However, these improvements were not enough to lift the overall level of the team, which is ultimately very similar to how it was at the end of last season, when the team finished 17th in the league. #THFC #Tottenham #Frank

How does #Rodri’s performance this season compare to 2023/24? While the eye test might suggest his impact has declined significantly after his severe knee injury, our data shows that to be only marginally true. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner still ranks very highly across almost all role-specific metrics, with only slight drops, most notably in passing accuracy and ball retention. At the same time, he is more involved on the ball (higher share of team touches) and significantly more active off the ball, recording more tackles, interceptions and counterpressures when normalised by opponent touches. These shifts may be linked to #ManchesterCity’s reduced level of control in today's #PremierLeague. Comparing 2025/26 with 2023/24, #ManCity’s possession has fallen from 65.6% to 59.7%, while field tilt has dropped from 75.2% to 63.5%. That context may be increasing Rodri’s defensive burden.

#Como just recorded the highest single-match xG without scoring in the top 5 🇪🇺 leagues since 2017/18. Nico #Paz's missed penalty was enough to surpass the previous record holder, none other than... #Atalanta, who had 5.64 non-penalty xG in a goalless draw vs Empoli in 2018/19 #SerieA

How does #Semenyo rank among #PremierLeague wingers and attacking midfielders since 2024/25 in terms of underlying attacking metrics? Our data place him above average for shooting production (non-penalty xG P90) and slightly below average for chance creation (open-play xA P90). Compared with #ManchesterCity’s current wingers, #Doku and #Savinho rank among the very best in the league for chance creation, but both sit below Semenyo for shot production. #Marmoush is the most direct comparison within the current #ManCity squad: the Egyptian’s output currently surpasses Semenyo’s in both shooting and chance creation, with the caveat of a large disparity in overall team level between City and #Bournemouth. #Transfers

🚨🔵 Manchester City confirm Antoine Semenyo as new signing, set to wear number 42. “It was my first number at Bristol City when I first signed and that always stuck with me. It was either 42 or 24, and 24 wasn’t available so I went back to my first number”.

#ManCity have been much more reliant on counter-attacks to create chances this season. Their xG from counters per game and share of non-penalty xG have both more than doubled compared to a steady eight-season baseline. For the first time, #Guardiola’s team appears at or near the top of the #PremierLeague by these metrics. #ManchesterCity

#MLS just announced it will switch to a July-May season starting in 2027 🇺🇸 Among other things, this should reduce the number of matches played in uncomfortably hot temperatures, which is much higher than in the top 5 European leagues 🌡️

#Ekitike and #Sesko have certainly been among the most exciting young attackers in the #Bundesliga over the past two seasons, but how do their underlying performance stats compare? Ekitike demonstrates superior underlying numbers in almost every key stat: he takes significantly more shots of slightly better average quality (xG/shot), which results in much higher xG production. However, Sesko has been more efficient in converting his chances. Ekitike's contribution to chance creation is also greater, as measured by open-play xA, and his involvement in the final third and inside the opposition box is higher. The one area where Sesko clearly outperforms Ekitike is in aerial duels, as he tops the Offensive AERO ranking among Bundesliga forwards over the last two seasons. #Transfers #PremierLeague #Liverpool #LFC #Newcastle #NewcastleUnited #NUFC

Key Tactical Insight: Inter’s Set-Piece Strategy & Efficiency 🎯🧠 In @SkySport’s Champions League Final preview, @lumastro highlighted several key tactical insights. A deeper look at Inter’s corner kick patterns reveals a clear and intentional approach in both how and where they deliver the ball. There’s a strong tactical preference for outswinging corners: 75% from the right side and 41% from the left. A choice that helps create space and structure around aerial duels, increasing the likelihood of winning second balls. In terms of delivery zones, corners are most frequently aimed at the near post and central areas. Specifically, 42.7% of right-side corners and 33.9% of those from the left are delivered into the front zone, while 24.3% (right) and 29.6% (left) target the central area near the goal. These consistent delivery patterns suggest a deliberate strategy to overload high-probability zones for flick-ons and second-ball chances. Inter’s set-piece structure reflects tactical discipline and efficiency and could prove to be a decisive weapon in their Champions League. 🏆⚽️ #Inter #SetPieces #ChampionsLeague #InterPSG #UCLFinal #MatchAnalysis #SkySport #Soccerment

Different approaches: will the UCL Final be decided by individual duels? ⚔️⚽️ In @SkySport’s Champions League Final preview, @lumastro highlighted several key tactical insights. Inter’s playing style avoids dribbling as a main weapon: over the last six Serie A seasons, they’ve consistently ranked 19th or 20th for attempted dribbles, favoring quick combinations and triangular passing instead. In contrast, Paris Saint-Germain leads both Ligue 1 and the Champions League in attempted dribbles, with four players averaging 2+ successful dribbles per 90 minutes. Two teams, two philosophies, and two radically different ways of approaching 1v1 situations. #ChampionsLeague #PSG #Inter #MatchAnalysis #PSGInter #UCLFinal #SkySport #Soccerment

Inter’s pressing style evolution from last season – a tactical key for the UCL Final? 🔵⚫️ In @SkySport’s Champions League Final preview, @lumastro highlighted several key tactical insights, including Inter’s evolution in pressing. Inter has significantly improved both pressing intensity (PPDA) and pressing efficiency (BDP) compared to the 2023/24 season. But the most notable leap comes in their ability to create chances from high turnovers: 📊 Now 1st in Serie A for xG generated from high recoveries (up from 13th last season) ⚠️ And 4th for the percentage of total xG coming from high recoveries (up from 19th) A more aggressive and effective pressing approach is becoming a trademark of Inzaghi’s Inter and could prove decisive in the Champions League Final. 🔥 #PSGInter #Inter #PSG #UCLFinal #Soccerment #SkySport #SimoneInzaghi

⚪⚫ The numbers don’t lie: Tudor has radically transformed Juventus’ style of play. During the latest episode of Sky Calcio Club, Fabio Caressa and his guests highlighted a crucial point: despite the different contexts (Tudor has only coached 9 games, while Motta managed Juventus for the entire season), the data shows a clear tactical shift under Tudor! Here’s a comparison with Thiago Motta’s Juventus: 🔷 3rd in xG from counterattacks (vs 11th) 🔷 6th in forward pass % (vs 20th) 🔷 1st in 1-2 combinations (vs 10th) 🔷 4th in progressive passes (vs 20th) 🔷 2nd in vertical passes in the opponent’s half (vs 20th) 🔷 17th in counter-pressing intensity (vs 1st) #Juventus #Tudor #ThiagoMotta #SerieA #FootballAnalytics #Tactics #MatchAnalysis #Soccerment #SkySport
