@financialsanity @neoavatara “A skeleton force” couldn’t maintain order, which is why most of the country fell to the Taliban in the months before our withdrawal after we’d drawn down 82% of our troops in 2020. We would have needed something like 30-50,000 troops there to keep the Taliban at bay.

@neoavatara Sadly, Afghanistan could still be a Country if America had kep a skeleton force there with allied support. Instead , look what took over the vacuum created when Trump decided to withdraw from Afghanistan. Yes, it was Biden left to do the dirty work after Trump committed to it.

@Clarksterh @neoavatara Democracies don’t just “get…in place.” The collapse of the regime is more likely to lead to sectarian violence, civil war, and a massive refugee crisis than anything else.

@neoavatara Exception if you can get a democracy in place. And Iran, probably more so than any other non-democracy, has a good chance to become a functional/stable democracy IFF the existing regime is out of picture.

@neoavatara Time will tell how it manifests, but the history of Iran/Persia is very different than the history of the region as a whole.

@JustinWStapley Or maybe you mean the principles of fiscal conservatism and why it may not be smart to start another open-ended, preemptive war in the Middle East when we’re $39 trillion in debt?

@JustinWStapley You mean like support for the constitutional principle that Congress should be involved in decisions to take military action? Or do those principles no longer matter because the GOP’s GodKing Trump sees fit to ignore the Constitution?

This article speaks to the seeds of concern I observed in NeverTrump as early as six years ago. We are observing in real time those seeds coming to fruition. And it's why I assert that NeverTrump is a failed project that failed to articulate what it was for and made all efforts about what it was against. This path of putting opposition to personality over support of principle will never be the path to conservative renewal.
Mike Coté@ratlpolicy

Check out my debut over at @VitalCenterMag, a broadside against the cynical & hypocritical Never Trump opposition to the Iran War. For a group of people who claim to put "Country Over Party," they sure are doing the opposite right now.

@briannalyman2 When Biden left office, core PCE growth over the prior 12 months was 2.8%. It’s now 3.1%. Also, the word you’re looking for is “lackeys,” not “latchkeys.” If you’re going to try and insult someone, you should at least know what the words you’re using mean.

@RLHeinrichs Exactly. Upsetting godking Trump could destroy the alliance, so in order to preserve the alliance we must not say anything that could anger him, regardless of what’s true. This is cult behavior.

@RLHeinrichs I love how the neocon crowd is arguing that Iran’s capabilities have been completely obliterated and yet they are simultaneously on the verge of a massive escalation of the war. This is the problem with the GOP becoming a cult that worships Trump as a god.

They are not mutually exclusive. As we’ve watched with Russia and Ukraine for the last several years. NOT escalating doesn’t necessarily result in the absence of escalation- it permits the other side to escalate.
Ryan Goodman@rgoodlaw

Q: "Just to put a fine point on this though, is the President in the process of winding down this war or escalating the conflict." Secretary Bessent: "Again, they're not mutually exclusive." Umm. Yes. They. Are.

@carney @JamesSurowiecki This is why MAGA is best understood as a religion. You worship Trump as a god, and therefore anyone who doesn’t support Trump becomes Hitler and evil incarnate. I hope someday you let the real God back into your life, John.

This is actually a disgusting comment. Many traitors have been veterans. Does Christie not remember Benedict Arnold? Hitler was a wounded veteran. This doesn’t absolve Mueller for what he became.
Chris Christie@GovChristie

I knew and worked with Bob Mueller. I didn’t always agree with him, but he was a Patriot who never said no to his country’s call for service. To speak this way about any veteran is reprehensible; especially so when you are the Commander-in-Chief. Shame on the President.

@redsteeze Israel invades another country and your response is to complain about Democrats. Israel First neocons like you are happy to sacrifice American lives for Bibi Netanyahu’s war of choice because you don’t actually believe in anything. We shouldn’t be fighting Israel’s war for them.

@KenGardner11 Trump says we’ve already won. Why is deciding to not destroy civilian energy infrastructure surrendering? What Trump is threatening is completely incongruent with our stated goals. Are we trying to punish the Iranian people by throwing them into darkness?

@briannalyman2 Addendum: Saying that we were connected by “religion” papers over a lot of sectarian differences among Christians that existed at the time. Most of the Founders (to the extent they were religious) were Anglicans, even though the Anglican Church lost adherents during that era.

@briannalyman2 America certainly had a dominant culture and religion at the time of the Revolution, but that was before we treated black people as people and not property & before we became a continental empire that incorporated huge areas that were previously Spanish & French territory. 2/2

AMERICA IS NOT A PROPOSITIONAL NATION🔽 Simmons: "I think what I would like is for Donald Trump to say ... We‘re going to stop making arguments like Rubio made when he went to Munich and he said, 'we have bonds of culture and heritage and religion,' which excludes people who don‘t have European culture, heritage or necessarily religion." Lyman: "You're mad at Marco Rubio for saying that culture, heritage, whatever, ties us together. If not those things, what does tie people together?" Simmons: "Ideology, a belief in freedom, a belief that we have a country that‘s not rooted in soil or blood. It‘s a country that‘s rooted in the fact that we all have the same values, and we want to have a place where we can all prosper and aspire together. That‘s what ties us together." Lyman: "I reject the proposition that America is just a propositional nation." Simmons: "What is it then? If it‘s not a nation rooted in values and ideas and commitment?" Lyman: "Have you ever read Federalist Paper No. 2 by John Jay? Jay says that we are blessed by providence to be a people connected by our culture, our language, our religion."

Jimmy Kimmel was postponed for two days by Disney executives because he came out and immediately and falsely on air said Charlie Kirk was killed by "MAGA", something that is already being disproven in the Tyler Robinson trial. There is still zero evidence the FCC or the Trump administration had anything to do with his two day suspension.
Paul Farhi@farhip

Jimmy Kimmel was threatened by the head of the FCC and taken off the air for a week for saying much less about Charlie Kirk.
