The weirdest mystery in Game of Thrones is why Benjen Stark joined the Night’s Watch becos when you actually think about it, his life makes almost no sense. Benjen was a Stark prince, The only surviving son left in Winterfell after Brandon and Lyanna died. which means politically he was incredibly important. And yet right after Robert’s Rebellion he voluntarily abandons his entire future forever. No marriage, no children, no lands…nothing. The timeline gets even stranger when you realize Benjen may have known the truth about Lyanna and Jon meaning there’s a real chance he spent the rest of his life carrying a secret that destroyed half his family. And if that’s true? Joining the Watch looks like he did it out of guilt especially because Benjen seems unusually cold whenever Jon talks romantically about the Night’s Watch. Almost like he knows exactly how miserable that life actually is. The show eventually turned him into a magical ranger zombie. But the books treat him like a ghost hanging over the entire Stark story. He felt like a man quietly punishing himself for something nobody else fully understands.
