A lot of competitors don't put any effort into learning about what is important to the development of a team. As a result, most of the time, the implementation of "structure" and "system" ends up being a net negative. Many coaches and IGLs don't attempt to develop a system around their players. Instead, they try to develop their players around their system, essentially imposing their will on others. In all fields, whether it be sports, business, or relationships, this approach is almost certain to fail. It personally took me way too long to accept that the mental component of teams is significantly more important than the strategic side. Playing loose and based on comfort is a way to naturally lean into the mental side;. this playstyle is often shunned and believed to be less consistent, but that is a viewpoint based entirely on incompetence regarding team dynamics and the mental game.
