during the recording of ‘into the sun’, they use a vocoder to record the vocals. for what the producer says, it was taehyung who picked up a “microphone with a crazy vocoder”. a vocoder (short for “voice encoder”) is an audio effect that takes the characteristics of a human voice and applies them to another sound, usually a synthesizer. a vocoder is NOT the same as auto tune. auto tune is mainly used to correct pitch. it takes your real voice and adjusts the notes so they’re perfectly in tune. it can also be used a stylistic choice in many tracks. just because an artist uses auto tune it doesn’t mean that it’s always to correct vocals. there are different functions as well. a vocoder, on the other hand, doesn’t fix your pitch at all. instead, it replaces your voice’s sound with a synthesizer. a simple way to think about it: auto tune “fixes” your voice and others. a vocoder “transforms” your voice into an instrument. in older music, especially during the 70s and 80s, the vocoder became popular in electronic, disco, and early hip hop. over time, the vocoder became a key tool for experimenting with how the human voice could blend with machines. the vocoder also appear in jazz, one of taehyung’s favourite genres, especially in the late 70s and early 80s, mostly in jazz-funk or fusion styles. jazz musicians used it not for robotic novelty, but to blend the human voice with synthesizers in a musical, expressive way. a classic example is ‘I thought it was you’ by herbie hancock, who used the vocoder to make the synth “sing” along with the melody, creating a smooth, futuristic sound that still felt musical and jazzy. the effect allowed jazz artists to experiment with new textures, harmonies, and electronic sounds while keeping the improvisational, expressive nature of jazz intact. I also didn’t know what a vocoder was before ‘into the sun’, but I’m glad I did my research and found out (please do your own, I’m not a musician, something might be slightly incorrect). sometimes the ideas bts members have are more special than what we can imagine! 🥺
