@parjanyudu @manoskol @psychotakes Please note you introduced mutual intelligibility after the first claim. We acquiesced this is virtually impossible for the modern speaker. However, on a spectrum of intelligibility, modern speakers can understand some degree of Koine. Katharevousa was mentioned in this vein.

@sofy66a @manoskol @psychotakes Even Koine and other later forms of AG will require previous training as a foreign language before achieving mutual intelligibility with Modern Greek [Horrocks, Greek: A History of the Language and its Speakers, 2010, pp. 2] (Note: there are additional semantic issues!).

@parjanyudu @manoskol @psychotakes You originally posited 'Ancient' Greek as a whole is foreign to modern speakers, Koine is generally considered part of that spectrum. The Homeric literary dialect is a valid point, but our confusion regarding your first claim is not unwarranted.

@manoskol @sofy66a @psychotakes I'm talking about Homeric Greek, not Koine. What is fictional about my explanation? Only thing fictional is your statement "...over 80% same language phonological..." drawn from thin air without any citation.

@parjanyudu @psychotakes I acquiesce the point is not relevant for the Ionic dialect, to which Homeric/Epic Greek belongs.

@sofy66a @psychotakes Intelligibility is not merely picking up a few words; It is being able to mutually understand each other without aid. The intelligibility of Modern & Homeric Greek would be so negligibly low that speakers in antiquity would have to learn Modern Greek as a foreign language.

@parjanyudu @psychotakes I’d argue low intelligibility, not zero, considering retained verb paradigms and use of the definite article. Iotacism was also well underway in the Koine period so it depends on definition of ‘ancient’ speaker, although admittedly not relevant for the Ionic dialect here.

@sofy66a @psychotakes It is not a gross exaggeration; The only intelligibility Modern Greek speakers have of Ancient Greek is primarily due to exposure and using the Greek script. An Ancient Greek speaker would likely have no intelligibility of Modern Greek with its diverged mophophonology & semantics

@psychotakes Ancient Greek is a foreign language to Modern Greek in terms of phonology, morphology and mutually intelligibility. There is no native speaker of Ancient Greek.

Bazinga@BazingaGR

Το μέλλον της χώρας αλλά και των Ελλήνων βρίσκεται στην επαρχία. Στα βουνά, στις θάλασσες...στην καλλιέργεια, την κτηνοτροφία, αλιεία. Το "ανέκδοτο" της καριέρας, του υλισμού, της άνεσης και της ευμάρειας τελειώνει...

@Ancapta This is entirely reductive of mathematics, in particular pure maths, which requires heavy ‘thinking’, proving, and theory. You are describing a small subset of elementary applied math courses that would be taken in high/secondary school or an engineering program.
