I will be harsh… Today’s cycling is full of riders who just like to travel the world, make good money with it, and absolutely do not care if they win, finish second, or just somewhere in the bunch; at most, they are happy to have good numbers and earn some UCI points. Where is the passion? The winning mentality? The kind of mindset that says: I would rather go all in and lose than never try? Because in the end, isn’t cycling supposed to be about daring to win, not just riding not to lose?

Volta Catalunya Stage 5 brought the big names to the front. Here are 6 things that stood out for me. 1. First off, the final climb was ridden in extreme wind which looked like head/headcross but also very gusty, so I think it was really coming from all directions. So I am going to disagree with the internet calling Jonas' win and performance low level, and I am going to say it was a crazy high level. The reality is extreme wind like that slows the times down so much you really can't estimate the power from the VAM. For example, I am here in Tucson training right now and I ride the same climb every day. When we have gusty head and crosswind, just like in the race, my times and VAM plummets dramatically. I think this is the reason why the VAM and, if you look at the speed of the leaders on the climb, were lower.

@tomdanielson I disagree. With Gall on second place that tells you everything. Gall even didn't go full gass whole climb! He jumps and stops. And Jonas rode according to his face expression on limit. And gain barely 1 min. It should be way more. I would not be happy on Jonas place.

I’d be brave enough to say that Jonas Vingegaard is in better shape than he has been at any point since the spring of 2024. Paris-Nice might have seemed like an outlier due to the weak startlist, but here he’s actually put a really solid performance at a relatively high altitude and at a high-level race. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean there will be an actual battle at the Tour, but he may have once again closed the gap to Tadej Pogacar within the margin of error - this is the threshold within which (should Pogacar make one major or two minor mistakes, such as poor nutrition or struggling with the weather, or his team being too depleted) Jonas might have a chance to hunt him down. This is still only 10–15% at most, but it’s twice as much as it would have been a month ago. #VoltaCatalunya

I am personally very disappointed with the current climbing level in cycling, regardless of whether I predicted something correctly or not, but it is disappointing that there are currently 4-5 cyclists worthy of being called that, and others is the F League and mega 🤡
