@david_kipping @peterathertonc1 There's a bit of ambiguity with the word "administrator," I think. When people talk about admin bloat, it's more the deans, VPs, vice-chancellors, and such... not the hard-working staff who run departments...

@peterathertonc1 My department has 2 admin staff for ~12 faculty, ~27 grad students, ~30 postdocs/postbacs. That’s not bloated, it’s chronic under staffing. Every year, we plead for more admin staff as one of our top priorities to affect high research productivity.

I don’t think the public grasps just how much researchers depend on administrators. Our admins are chronically overworked but we depend on them for grant preparation, salary distribution, expense management, helping with events, room bookings, teaching schedules and much more.

@HelsinHashtags It feels similar to past federal shutdowns. If your university already has the $$, it can keep spending it. But if you're waiting on a federal agency to send new $$... that's what may be delayed for a bit...
