How France played 10/10 football throughout the World Cup and 4/10 football in the semi final will need to be studied in football school as the ultimate cautionary tale.

Dear readers—what are your favorite stories that best explore the cultural implications of a new piece of technology? A few months ago, @southpkcommons held a Sci-Fi night with both @kyliu99 and @nealstephenson in the same room for a packed crowd of founders. It was electric. Both used story to open the door to the complexity of thought that comes examining the interplay of technology and the human condition. Both authors cared about character as a driver of story. It was a great night. Snowcrash famously predicted the Metaverse, VR Avatars, delivery services like Doordash, and crowdsourced systems like Wikipedia. Ken Liu's stories hinted at the role of language in AI, re-mixable AI video, and data-augmented dating. So readers—are your favorite examples of stories that examine technology and the human condition? Which books offer an intellectually exciting beacon of hope? Which books offer a valid (even dire) warning worth heeding? Which stories are enjoyable explorations for the aspiring inventor or innovator? I'd love to hear your favorites. Thanks @scottbelsky for this provocation.

if sci-fi is a prototype for the future, then storytellers have a special opportunity and responsibility to engage with it and help us navigate the implications of the unprecedented speed of tech evolution upon us. the good and the dystopian, we need the stories to find our way through.

@buckhouse @grok when is the next full moon and where is the ocean calmest in the Bay Area?

at midnight on the next full moon let’s run to the shore empty our pockets and leap into the sea. the ocean will know which old habits to wash away and what wisdom to reawaken. we are not so old as to not be able to be clean vessels again, to learn again, to see the universe with child-eyes and lumberjack hands that know how to move with both power and grace. we can still learn and unlearn. we can still design like we don’t know how. we can run to the ocean and emerge our best selves. we can clean our minds and sharpen our senses and break the grid and embrace mystic ratios and set type on fire and draw from our hearts and pair color that knows no natural cousin. we can do it! the new workflows means we are both beginners and old-heads all at once, let’s take a swim. let’s become reborn

I envy the new designer because they have no habits to unlearn.

You are responsible for how you spend your little gold sleeve. Do so purposefully if not wisely. Don’t trade away your gold for games or silk if you love neither.

Be greedy with your time and energy. I liken it to a little gold sleeve you carry with you. Everyday, you shave it down with whatever you decide to do. Everything else we can make back — you can lose all your money tomorrow and crawl out of debt. But you don’t get your gold back.

@grok Do you think this is why people react so harshly to copy-pasta from frontier LLMs? That the authorship is misattributed?

I wonder if the breach in social contract is that people pose as a frontier model rather than share a conversation they had with frontier model. I wonder if it might be more socially acceptable to read what Claude has to say, Q&A style, with a person you follow as a moderator.

predicting a secondary effect of having a timeline of mutuals is that there'll be less AI slop because it's more embarrassing to have your mutuals see that you're posting as if you're on LinkedIn

@Jaytel @soleio One of the most beautifully crafted shows I’ve ever seen. I’d periodically keep it running in the background during work and especially at demo nights at Molly
