I think it's both. You have it like a seed that is planted once you become aware of what is perceived as a "good" or "bad" person. Then you choose whether to nurture it or stray from it with series of decisions and situations you're faced with. Some may live under circumstances where that is much easier to nurture than it is for others. I also think Sometimes we as humans manually choose it out of obligation to show other people that good exists out there, or as something they can learn from too and then spread like a domino effect
