EXCLUSIVE: Senators Ashiru, Sodiq Umar Step Down for Saliu Mustapha. Two serving senators from Kwara State, Lola Ashiru (Kwara South) and Sodiq Umar (Kwara North), have stepped down their governorship ambitions for the 2027 election and thrown their weight behind their colleague, Senator Saliu Mustapha of Kwara Central Senatorial District. The development, it was learnt, followed a meeting held in Abuja, where the duo agreed to withdraw from the race and support Mustapha’s aspiration on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Sources said both senators have instead opted to seek re-election into the Senate. They have also picked up APC senatorial nomination forms accordingly. A party source, who spoke in confidence, said the decision was part of efforts to strengthen unity within the party and improve the party's chances ahead of the primaries. “They resolved that it is better to support one among them. Of the three, Senator Mustapha is considered the most suitable for the governorship,” the source said. The source added that the senators are committed to backing Mustapha irrespective of the mode of primary adopted by the party. “If it is consensus, they will push and make a case for him with the Governor who has the final say on it. And if it is direct primaries, they will still mobilise support for him,” the source said. Mustapha, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial District, is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. It will be recalled that a national daily had reported yesterday that both the Presidency and the APC national leadership are increasingly favourably disposed to his candidacy, citing his broad acceptability across the state. However, it remains unclear whether he has secured the backing of the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, whose influence is expected to play a pivotal role in the party’s eventual decision. ~ Confidence News Nigeria.

Beneath these poles lie the heads of four kings who invaded Ilorin in 1835 but were defeated: Alaafin Oluewu, the last ruler of the Oyo Empire; Sona Kpera (Worukura), the Sarkin Borgu; Sarkin Kaiama; and Sarkin Wawa.

Ilorin’s history lives in its landmarks, like the four iconic poles at the Emir’s Palace. More than just structures, they carry deep cultural and historical meaning. Tell us what you know about the cultural/historical significance of these poles! #IlorinHeritage #CulturalPride

Let be real: If the APC members in your own Senatorial district didn’t vote for you to return to the Senate in 2022, why would the entire State vote for you to be Governor in 2027? 🤔 You can’t build a 'New Kwara' on a foundation of primary defeats. Time for fresh energy, not recycled bids.
Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe@official_IYO

I am pleased to inform our supporters, well-wishers and people of Kwara State and beyond that I've formally taken another decisive step in the journey and quest to lead our dearest State come 2027, with the purchase of my Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms under the platform of the All Progressives Congress. The nomination form has also been signed by 120 bonfire APC members from across the 16 Local Governments in the state. This is not just a procedural milestone—it is a reaffirmation of my commitment to serve and to offer my very best in the interest of our dear state. I remain fully guided by the belief that leadership must be anchored on competence, experience, and a clear capacity to deliver measurable results. As the process unfolds, I assure all stakeholders and the good people of Kwara State that I am giving this aspiration my utmost effort—driven by a sense of duty, strengthened by experience, and focused on advancing the progress we all desire. Together, we will continue to pursue a future defined by stability, growth, and shared prosperity. Sen. Dr Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, APC Gubernatorial Aspirant, Kwara State, 30th April, 2026

Sometimes, I want to retire from engaging this “Ilorin” and that, but waking up to see different stereotypes, every day, by minute and hour; then I have to believe and realise that my retirement is not near.

@solihu0 @Is_Sophia2 Bro even if he wasn't the king he was their leader he rule them. Are onakakanfo cannot be in the same village with a king at that time, so all the Are onakakanfo are rulers of their respective village during their time

@solihu0 @Is_Sophia2 Afonja was not an immigrant he was the Are Ona Kakanfo of the Oyo Empire and was the king of ilorin He welcomed immigrants like Shehu Alimi, but they later turned against him, leading to his death and takeover Ilorin was originally a Yoruba town before becoming a Fulani emirate
