Making sand do math. Gets excited when hears 'safety', 'distributed systems', 'tail latency', 'cryptography', 'legacy payment systems’, 'trading'

If you're a software provider, you're obligated to consider efficiency. How many lifetimes per year do you waste on making people wait?

Okay, lets talk nerdy. One of most fundamental underpinnings of the way we think about doing infrastructure automation is the idea that it's best done in a declarative way. Having a declaration of intent, followed by an idempotent, convergent control loop.

@kelseyhightower The best "marketing" I've seen is the ability to download and try the tool, with e.g. a trial or some trivial payment. "Contact us for a quote" or get on a call with someone: thanks, I'm gone. E.g. I use GH Copilot because it was a few clicks to get started and test it.

91/ Incredible image of the team of engineers working to close off the gap in the berm where the road was, even as the lava flow closed in on them. Given how effective the berm proved in diverting the lava, this is incredible work.

@koddsson I also think fondly about the same company. We do friday feelings(usually) at indó, but we haven't nailed the processes yet.

We also did a bunch of scrum stuff but did it really well. Everything had a purpose and though was put into all the process so it wasn't just a daily meetings just to have one. It was actually tools to get stuff done and I think that was the only time I've done scrum that worked.

I used to work at a company that had a "Friday Feelings" meeting each week with the team. Probably one of the best companies I've worked for.

A random thing that will probably help someone out eventually: Should you ever have the occasion to e.g. sell a company or have your startup equity become liquid, call your bank (or chat up a new bank) *in advance*, and ask "If I were to bring in new money, what's your offer?"

@Jon_Gnarr hæhæ Ég er að vinna hjá indó og við heyrðum af því sögu að þú hefðir sagt að “við værum að reyna að vera kúl en værum bara nördar” Við erum að sjálfsögðu mjög uppi með okkur - hvar gæti ég hlustað á hrósið?

@adamhjk @milesward One thing I love about AWS VPCs is that they force you to decently architect your networks, which again forces you to think about failures No more layer-2 nets stretched between far-away physical DCs “because it was easy” AWS might not be cheaper but usually much better

@milesward I get it. My meta point is this - for a huge number of workloads, cloud *isn't* cheaper. It's obviously, manifestly more expensive. It has other benefits! Many of which are that we have largely forgotten that we knew how to build systems that were both physical and virtual.

Literally *everything* that happens in your cloud provider are things that we did, professionally, in datacenters, before there was a cloud provider. You can do them. It's not magic. You might choose not to! Which is great. I choose not to! But it's not because we can't. :)
