❤️SHE MATTERS: ERICA HAY!❤️ “She was the most beautiful mother you would ever meet. She did everything for everyone and always made sure her girls came first.” Mum-of-four Erica Hay died in a suspicious house fire at her home in Warnbro, Western Australia, on Friday. Her male partner ran from the blaze with a three-year-old child - today police are questioning him. Officers have confirmed they are treating Erica’s death as a homicide. Erica is the 32nd Australian woman killed this year and the 12th woman lost to violence in April. The 30-year-old had only been in a relationship with the man for three or so months. “Now those poor girls (Erica’s daughters) are without a mother for the rest of their lives because some evil person (allegedly) took that away from them,” a good friend of Erica’s told a media outlet today. “She did everything for those girls, no matter how bad she was feeling. “She always made sure that those girls had everything.” The killing of Erica in the midst of widespread outrage at the ongoing slaughter of Australian women shows how far we still have to go before gendered violence is erased. This weekend, women from all walks of life are raising their voices in unison, shining a light on violence against women. As I write, the lives of 32 Australian women have been erased in 2024. Eleven were allegedly killed by their current or former partners. A further five women were allegedly killed by other family members. While 9 of the women were allegedly murdered by people they knew (but who were not family members). The last eight women were killed by strangers. The youngest woman was just 22 years old. The oldest was 81. Some had disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. These women came from all cultures - all sections of society. Like Erica, 20 of the victims were mothers and 31 of the 32 women killed this year, were allegedly lost to male violence. I cannot be more clear on this – gendered violence is the key cause of femicide in Australia. We women are marching this weekend because it is time to accept that violence against women is not a woman’s problem to fix. We women shoulder the burden of organising rallies. We’re the ones lobbying governments for DV funding and support services. It's women who are rolling out petitions, pushing for changes to criminal legislation to keep our sisters safe. It's left to women to document lives lost. And it’s women who almost always pick up the pieces after violence. We need men to stand with us - but more importantly we need men to take action because without buy-in from males we won't close the chapter on violence. We can’t change the story for Erica – or the other women killed this year and in years past. We must make tomorrow's story different because if we don't, more women’s lives will be lost. Please, let's make Erica's life matter. EXCL: Fire service bosses in Shropshire talked about wanting to 'kill' and harm female colleagues. Leaked messages we’ve obtained refer to women as “lazy cow”, “feckin bint” and “useless”. “I could still kill her buddy”, said the Chief about one woman. itv.com/news/2024-04-2…

❤️SHE MATTERS: TARA MARIE MORRISON!❤️ Chances are you haven't heard of this woman, her death over-shadowed by the murders of five women and a man at Bondi Junction on the weekend. She is the other Australian woman killed last week. Please, take the time to get to know her. This is 38-year-old mum Tara Marie Morrison. Sometime between Thursday and Friday, Tara was murdered at a home in Broadwater, WA. A man and woman known to her are charged with murder. Tara is the 28th Australian woman killed this year and the eighth woman killed since April 1. Tara had an 11-year-old son who is now being cared for by her loved ones. “To everyone, the woman who tragically passed away was not just a 38-year-old woman, she was Tara Morrison, a loving mother who leaves behind an 11-year-old son who was at his grandmother’s house during the incident,” a relative of Tara said. And she is right. Tara was so much more than the faceless 38-year-old woman mentioned in passing by media over the weekend. She was a dedicated and awesome mum. She was a much-loved sister and daughter. She was a committed and passionate member of her community. She was a woman hellbent on living her best possible life. Like those killed at Bondi Junction, Tara deserved to live a long and peaceful life without the specter of violence. She mattered. Please remember that. ❤️SHE MATTERS: HANNAH McGUIRE!❤️ Hannah McGuire was a 23-year-old woman with her whole life ahead of her - she overflowed with all the promises of youth: Hope, achievement, love, community, friendship, career, fun and everything else every young women deserves. But all of this is gone now, wiped out by another act of alleged male (And domestic) violence. Hannah's body was found in a burnt out car on Friday at Scarsdale in Victoria. A male is charged with her murder. It's believed he is her former partner. Hannah is the 22nd Australian woman killed this year. She is the third woman killed in the Ballarat region in the past few months. Hannah recently separated from her partner and an intervention order was put in place to keep her safe, it's been reported. Media say she had concerns for her safety. Hannah is well known in her community and loved and respected by so many people. “Fly high beautiful angel. Thank you Hannah for all the wonderful memories that we will cherish forever,” a friend said on social media. “Our hearts are broken.” Hannah's loss should anger us all. One woman killed is one too many - 22 women killed is an injustice no Australian should take lying down. We can't keep turning our back on the killing of women in Australia - but I know many Australians will turn away. We cannot keep turning our back on the perpetrators of violence in our country - but I know this will be the case yet again. We cannot ignore anymore the safety nets whose holes are so big women keep falling through - but I know these will not be fixed or funded. How many more women's lives will we see wiped out before Australia truly stands up? Will it end at Hannah? No. It won't. And that is Australia's shame. Sadly, it's another day when we have lost another woman to violence. A woman has died in suspicious circumstances in Fortitude Valley, Qld. Police have taken a male, believed to be a relative, into custody. No one has been charged. She was found following a request for a welfare check at the home. The woman is the 21st killed this year and the second woman lost to violence in two days.

❤️SHE MATTERS: NATASHA NIBIZI!❤️ On Tuesday, 29-year-old Natasha Nibizi went to her former partner's house in Doolandella, Queensland, after he asked her to visit so they could talk things out. She never left. Instead, of talking he ended Natasha's life. Then, like so many cowardly thugs before him, he killed himself. Natasha is the 14th Australian woman lost to violence this year and she is the eighth woman killed in February. All of the women lost to violence in Australia this year have had their lives stolen, allegedly, by men. And 11 of the victims knew their alleged killers, with domestic violence playing a part in eight of the murders. There's been three murder suicides of women in the past eight weeks. Natasha leaves behind four children, the youngest is only eight months old. Thankfully, the children were in the care of a friend and were not subjected to seeing their mum murdered. By all accounts, Natasha was an awesome human who loved her children and who was warmly thought of by her family, friends and community. It's just a disgrace to see, over and over again, the slaughter of women in Australia. It's maddening and saddening. I just cannot find the words right now for this. Another woman lost to an epidemic that is both preventable and predictable and yet, somehow unstoppable. It's 2024 and here I am having to point out a very basic point about domestic violence and DV killings. Everything domestic violence IS NOT: A 'crime of passion'. An act of love. Everything domestic violence IS: A crime comprising many aspects including control, hate, rage, selfishness, cowardice, entitlement, violence and abuse.

Just a gentle reminder of the toll of violence on Australia. These are the 12 women killed in less than eight weeks. Not all were killed as a result of domestic or intimate partner violence. Some were killed by males known to them (not familial) and some by strangers. They all deserve to be remembered. Their names are: Janice Walker Nerol Doble Alison (Ali) Robinson Keira Marshall Alana Martin Vyleen White Antoinette (Toni) Tozer Donna Baraket Samira Kamaleddine Amarjit Kaur Sardar Rebecca Young Min (Sue) Cho Follow my work at: ❤️Insta: instagram.com/sherelemoodyfe… ❤️Australian Femicide Watch: t.co/UroVD68fcd ❤️The Memorial to Women and Children Lost to Violence: t.co/UroVD68fcd ❤️The Australian Femicide & Child Death Map: t.co/RDVGgeLKBq

❤️SHE MATTERS: AMARJIT KAUR SARDAR!❤️ Most people know her as the 'tractor death' or 'slasher death' victim but she has a name - Amarjit Kaur Sardar. On Friday, Amarjit's husband allegedly murdered her and then tried to make her death look like an accident at Woodhill in Queensland. He even called 000, allegedly lying about how the 41-year-old woman died. He has since been charged with her murder. Amarjit is the 10th Australian woman killed this year. Amarjit is more than a headline. She was raising two children, working on a property in Queensland and living her life the best she could. She was also experiencing (allegedly) ongoing violence at the hands of her husband. We know police attended the home following multiple reports of abuse - and yet her alleged abuser remained free. Amarjit was also being supported by a local domestic violence support service. It will take time before we know exactly how and why Amarjit fell through the cracks of the domestic violence and police safety nets that were meant to support her. In the meantime, I can only hope this woman is remembered as more than just the 'slasher' victim. Remembering her name is the least we can do for Amarjit and for her children. She matters. Another Australian woman killed. 'Man known to her' in police custody. That's eight women in six weeks. All killed by men. Yet mainly women + non-binary people talking about this. We are not engaging boys and men to help end men's violence. Until we reach them, nothing changes.

A male has since been charged with murder. Donna is the 8th Australian woman killed this year and the third Australian woman lost to violence in five days. As with all the other women killed this year, Donna's life was allegedly erased by a male - and all but one were killed by men know to them. Donna's tenant is the person charged with her murder. Needless to say, the never ending toll of (gendered) violence continues its unfettered march across Australia. There's no hope 2024 will be the year women can live their lives in peace. ❤️SHE MATTERS: ALANA MARTIN!❤️ This morning a man on social media said to me "but what did she do to him?" after I posted about the killing of another woman in Australia. Alana Martin was the woman he was speaking about. Alana was killed in her home at Owanyilla on Queensland's Fraser Coast on Sunday. Her former partner is charged with her murder. Alana is the fifth Australian woman killed this year. These are all the things Alana did to deserve being murder. N.O.T.H.I.N.G. Last week Alana celebrated two major life milestones - the entry into high school of her eldest boy and the start of kindy for her youngest. This post is the second one I've penned in mere hours - Keira Marshall was also killed on Sunday. Both women were mums, both were loved and adored by their families and their communities. Both were allegedly lost to acts of male violence, perpetrated by those who knew them. Indeed, all of the women killed this year were lost to violence allegedly perpetrated by males who knew them. Their deaths follow an appalling femicide toll in 2023, when I counted more than 74 women killed. At least 10 children were also lost to violence last year. Meanwhile, we hear nothing about women killed from our leaders and we see very little discussion around their deaths on social media. And, when we do see community discussion, too often the refrain "what did she do to deserve it" emerges. One week. Three murdered women. Welcome to 2024 - another year of femicides! On Friday, a woman was killed in a fire at Glenorchy in Tasmania. Today, her alleged killer faced court charged with her murder. Her loved ones confronted him in court but she is not yet publicly identified. She is the third woman killed in a week and the third killed this year. ❤️

Can we talk about how there are three women in hospital, fighting for their lives after three assaults in the past three days - all at the hands of men? ❤️ One woman was critically injured in St Kilda overnight when a man allegedly stabbed her. ❤️ One woman was critically injured at Bankstown Hospital two days ago when a man allegedly bashed and choked her. ❤️ One woman was critically injured at Bribbaree today when a man allegedly set her and her home on fire. For every post I make on a woman killed, there are many many more victims who suffer physical and psychological injuries at the hands of men. We don't often hear about these women. ❤️
