It spreads person to person much more easily than some are saying falsely. We must err on the side of caution this time. Mistakes can be deadly This is not a cold.

Agree with @VinGuptaMD — mandatory quarantine is the correct approach here. Casual quarantine built on “good faith” that people will do everything perfectly for 42 days in their home is an unfair expectation to be placing on anyone and puts everyone at risk if there are any slips or cracks. #Hantavirus

No one should be surprised more ship passengers tested positive - this was expected. The focus has been on how to prevent secondary transmission, and this is what I discussed last night on @MSNOWNews This is why I've been harping on the 'prolonged close contact' being inconsistent with the literature and experience on the ship - if we get this wrong, those in quarantine take the wrong precautions (or we don't isolate them...), and spread continues. @AymanM, @crampell, @ahylton26, @Elise_Jordan

I agree with @j_g_allen here and I am also surprised how many public health colleagues have been opining in a definitive manner on Hantavirus/Andes Virus transmission as if this is something we are all extremely familiar with. There are very few true experts that work closely on Andes Virus epidemiology specifically. When I saw this #Hantavirus outbreak, I turned to the primary literature to see what we actually know/don't know and have tried to share data. The best characterized outbreak I could find was the NEJM paper referenced here. It is one outbreak but at the least, it tells us what is possible and both droplets and aerosols were implicated in the transmission here in high-contact settings.

Last year half of CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program staff were fired. This is the group responsible for investigating cruise ship outbreaks. The cuts were made despite the fact that US taxpayers don’t pay for this team. The cruise ship industry does.
