The Division of the Arts & Humanities is considering consolidating its 15 departments into eight, reducing language instruction, and establishing minimum class and program sizes, citing new federal policies and shifts in the “underlying financial models” for higher education.

Apparently newspapers are running ChatGPT book recommendation articles filled with fake AI hallucinated books. The future is very stupid. Via @tbretc/post/DJ2sLYHshPZ?xmt=AQF0CN3J9zzHLhHmhLwAZSAEaw4iHqCpbsqO5BTrD5ViOg" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">threads.com/@tbretc/post/D…

What's the deal with how some 19th c. sources drop the "c" or "ac" in McGuire, MacPhee, etc., and instead write "M'guire"? A standard contraction (like Wm. for William), or something more, like to hide Irishness? Did people do this in manuscript? Example: catalog.mwa.org/vwebv/holdings…

Matthew Sutton's latest in JAAR: we should retire "evangelicalism" from our histories of the 18th and 19th c. and reserve the term for the post-World War II conservative political movement motivated by sexism, racism, and xenophobia: academic.oup.com/jaar/article-a…

For creative writing classes that require shorter readings, I stand at the Xerox machine and copy every. single. thing we will read & distribute a packet at the beginning of the semester. They appreciate this very much. They never have to chase down an assignment and it's free.

Yes, college students have lost their ability to read. I have taught lit for 24 years; the threshold started to decline in the late aughts and nosedived during Covid. A thread with observations + how I get my students to read ALL (or at least most) of the reading I assign: 🧵
