@larryvc @sandskin22 If it’s a rare occurrence, then maybe your faith in the next gen is misplaced… at least in Boston

I was walking into a CVS and a ~12-year old boy was ahead of me. He opened the door to let me go in, but I held the door at a higher point and said for him to go in. He then politely said, “No thank you, I insist.” So I went in with my faith in the next generation reaffirmed.

@Ken_Rosenthal What I have suggested is to try to get our cake and eat it too. Restore the merit and stakes of the regular season AND give half the league a chance. This would I hope also restore the LCS and WS series being the crowning games and make October glorious again.

@Ken_Rosenthal More than any other sport baseball is a long tragic glorious meritocracy. It takes a long season to find out who is really better. A random postseason makes the season worthless and championships practically worthless.

@Ken_Rosenthal The biggest argument against this is that the higher seeds would sit too long not playing. The Koreans don’t seem to mind. Would you rather play a random series that makes the regular season worthless? Or sit for some time but have a significant advantage?

@Ken_Rosenthal Make that a 3 out of 5 series with the top seed having a 1-0 head start. I would prefer top seed gets all home games again. But maybe give the lower seed one home game in this series. The winner goes to LCS, best of 7. WS best of 7.

@Ken_Rosenthal This would mean the 3 seed wins 1 game or the 4 seed wins 2. It would only take 2 games to decide who advances. 1 travel day until the next series. Do it against for seed 2 vs the winner. Winner advances to face the top seed team

@Ken_Rosenthal What I recommend is expand to 32 teams, 4 divisions of 8 teams in 2 leagues. 4 in each division make the playoffs. Seed 3 hosts 4 but as the KBO does, the higher seed gets a 1-0 game lead. Best 2 of 3. Lower seed gets no home games, no travel days.

@Ken_Rosenthal People are handwringing that we have 90 wins and less teams in the LCS. MLB has made the regular season worthless because the postseason is now just a random bunch of wins and losses that don’t crown any merit but random luck.

@larryvc Good stuff, Larry. As someone who is not a business leader, it makes sense to me, but I guess the cycle you describe on top is not uncommon. Doesn’t surprise me.

@larryvc I guess you have seen this play out poorly like this often enough that you decided to tweet this out for some friendly education?

There is no such thing as "no covenant" debt. All debt facilities have at least one covenant - you have to make payments to service the loan on-time. Here's what often precedes companies that break that core covenant...

@larryvc Mind sharing one concrete example of what you thought was that much better in person vs over zoom?

@soosang I knew in person team meetings would be better than video, but I didn’t appreciate how much better it would be. I was in the camp of willing to make an investment without meeting the team in person, but I very much question that now.

After 6 months of video calls, I completed my first two on-site half day in-person full management meetings this week and there’s no way to replicate what I learned in person over Zoom. It’s an order of magnitude better in person at the company. That conclusion surprised me.

@larryvc On the whole I agree with you, Larry. Without such an honest and loving community giving real and edifying feedback, how do you get genuine self-awareness? You learn who you are not by yourself but through relationships.

I used to think of self awareness as a personal quality - something certain people have and others have to a lesser degree. I’ve come to believe over time that none of us are implicitly self aware. None of us have full visibility into who we are and how others are reacting to us.

@larryvc “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
