I think we’re gonna have to show as much appreciation as we can to Q-Tip for getting the Slum Village demo, and making sure we heard J Dilla’s production. Think about it. So many others would have fumbled it, and not place Dilla’s beats in a visible forum. Big up.
Here’s proof of concept. My book ‘The Art of Sampling: The Sampling Tradition of Hip Hop/Rap Music and Copyright Law, 3rd Edition.’ I’m giving the digital (PDF) version of my book away for free. And I’m doing so for three reasons. First, I believe that the information and ideas inside my book are needed today more than ever. With so little accurate information around about sampling, and too much conjecture about copyright law, my book serves as a major force against disinformation. And I believe that the public benefits from having more access to my book, not less. Second, I need your help. I’m trying to print hard copies of my book and, because of its size — it’s roughly 2000 pages — it requires a custom 3 volume book set. So I’m turning directly to my followers to help me raise the money. Third, this year I will be expanding BeatTips, my flagship music education site that I founded in 2001; and I will also be launching two new arts and culture publications that feature new voices.
