Im in a town small enough for everyone to know everyone, and I don't enjoy being physically around people in the first place. Even so, I both need and enjoy socializing.. As tacky as this is going to sound - online friends CAN be genuine friends. My longest lasting and most meaningful friendships has been with people I've never met, spending most hours of the day in vc. Alone but never lonely. If its all you got, it's still something. Watch stuff, listen to stuff, play stuff.

Who knows, could be a little bit of both? Im thinking it's at least in part due to the stigmatization and framing of Empathy as weakness. Whatever the case, empathy for your fellow man became undesireable or "weak"... We lost the only redeemeable trait we had. Idiocracy and emotional incompetence is upon us.
