Public safety debates should start with facts. Unfortunately, recent commentary about Detroit’s gunshot detection system in the Michigan Advance relies on several statistics that obscure rather than illuminate the technology’s real impact. In our latest blog, we revisit the Koper Curve, an evidence-based policing principle showing that short, purposeful patrols in crime hot spots can maximize deterrence while preserving limited resources. Research suggests visits of roughly 10–15 minutes deliver the greatest impact before benefits begin to diminish. Solutions like ResourceRouter help agencies operationalize this strategy — using data-driven insights to guide patrol deployment, optimize officer time, and ensure proactive presence where it matters most. The inconvenient truth: Most gunfire is never reported to 911. Now what? Tech that improves first responder awareness, time and precision in order to save lives and gather evidence should not be controversial.

I'm proud of our team's commitment to truth and justice. Our ShotSpotter tech alerted to gunfire on May 31, 2020, but we weren't involved in Michael Williams' arrest or prosecution. We stepped in to point to the fact that ShotSpotter doesn’t detect close contact gunfire muted inside of a car. Full statement: soundthinking.com/press-releases…"

Amid the news of the settlement between the City of Chicago and Mr. Williams, it’s important to keep in mind undisputed facts about ShotSpotter’s involvement with the matter – which didn’t include being a party to Mr. Williams’s lawsuit – in order to avoid the regurgitation of false and misleading statements that have long been corrected: soundthinking.com/press-releases…

📍Sparks, Nevada Since ShotSpotter launched in 2023, there have been 577 gunfire alerts, resulting in 542 recovered shell casings, 17 seized guns and 23 arrests, according to the Sparks Police Department. "(ShotSpotter) allows us to arrive on scene sooner, help victims sooner, obtain evidence that may have gone missing, locate witnesses and just make our investigations actually occur generally shorter so that we can bring those to justice that are causing crime and hurt to our citizens," Chief Crawforth said. 🔗mynews4.com/news/local/spa…

Celebrating Black History Month | Past to Present From breaking barriers to transforming modern policing, Dr. Lee P. Brown represents leadership that shaped generations. As the first Black Mayor of Houston and its former Police Chief, and later as NYPD Commissioner, Dr. Brown redefined what forward-thinking public safety leadership looks like. He championed community policing long before it became a national model, emphasizing trust, accountability, and meaningful partnership between law enforcement and the communities they serve. His legacy reminds us that progress in public safety is built over time — by leaders willing to innovate, listen, and lead with purpose.
