Can any lawyers out there explain to me how a case can get all the way to the Supreme Court without someone doing basic fact checking on the credibility of the plaintiff’s actual claim?

OceanGate is a private business and was operating in international waters. Its owner and staff scoffed at safety regulations. They sent an unworthy vessel into danger with NO backup plan or emergency beacon.
One thing we are NOT going to do is blame this on the US Coast Guard.
