Jeanne Shaheen, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. John Curtis, and their delegation provided a good opportunity to reaffirm that the bipartisan support for our alliance in the U.S. Congress remains strong. Building on the two bilateral summits last year, we are actively working together to further advance future-oriented cooperation, including Korea's strategic investment in the United States, peaceful use of nuclear energy, conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines, and shipbuilding. We shared the view that close communication between our two countries is essential to minimizing the impact of the crisis in the Middle East on people's livelihoods and industries. I also asked for cooperation from the U.S. Congress to improve the U.S. visa system so as to facilitate Korean investment in the United States. Il s’est moqué de la femme d’Emmanuel Macron. Il a pris un faux accent français. Il a dit au monde que Brigitte Macron « le traite extrêmement mal » et que le président français était « encore en train de se remettre d’un crochet du droit à la mâchoire ». C’était l’équivalent géopolitique d’un homme qui crie après des nuages. Macron était en Corée du Sud quand quelqu’un lui a posé la question. Il a marqué une pause. Il a considéré la question avec l’expression d’un homme qu’on vient d’informer qu’un golden retriever a uriné sur sa Bentley. Puis il a dit ceci : « Ni élégant ni à la hauteur. » Sept mots. C’était tout. Sept mots prononcés avec le calme tranquille et dévastateur de quelqu’un qui n’a vraiment pas besoin d’élever la voix parce que le personnel s’en chargera. C’était l’équivalent verbal d’un seul sourcil levé par un homme dans un costume parfaitement ajusté, regardant de haut quelqu’un qui vient de renverser du vin rouge sur la moquette à Versailles. Considérez l’homme à l’autre bout de ce sourcil. Un homme qui porte une casquette de baseball rouge aux réunions diplomatiques et une blanche aux enterrements. Un homme qui arrive aux occasions les plus solennelles du monde en ayant l’air d’avoir débarqué d’un chariot de golf. Un homme dont la routine matinale implique apparemment des quantités industrielles d’autobronzant appliqué sur un visage qui a, selon diverses estimations médicales, le profil cardiovasculaire d’un égout bouché de Manhattan. Un homme dont l’idée d’un dîner d’État est un quart de livre mangé seul dans un cortège motorisé. C’est cet homme qui a décidé de faire la leçon au monde sur le mariage d’Emmanuel Macron. Trump a qualifié l’OTAN d’«  tigre de papier ». Il s’est moqué de la femme d’un chef d’État. Il a téléchargé toute cette performance embarrassante sur la chaîne YouTube de la Maison Blanche, brièvement, avant que quelqu’un dans le bâtiment ne se souvienne apparemment que la diplomatie existe et ne débranche la prise. La réponse de Macron est tombée comme un gant blanc posé doucement sur une table. Pas jeté. Posé. « Ni élégant ni à la hauteur. » Dans les cercles diplomatiques français, cette phrase est une déclaration de guerre. En anglais, elle se traduit grosso modo par : J’ai remarqué votre comportement, et je le trouve indigne de commentaire, ce qui est pourquoi je le commente une fois, calmement, avant de revenir aux affaires réellement importantes. Il y a un homme dans cette histoire qui a passé quatre-vingts ans sur cette terre et qui n’arrive toujours pas à trouver un costume qui lui va, une cravate qui s’arrête à sa ceinture, ou une teinte de fond de teint qui existe quelque part dans la nature. Et il y a un homme qui a répondu à une humiliation publique de la part de la personne la plus puissante sur terre par sept mots et une expression qui pourrait geler la Seine.
