What kind of childhood makes a top scientist? Is it enough to have all the right traits (brilliance, grit, etc) or do you need the right family too? And why should we care? A 🧵 on our paper on the Nobel Laureates. A teaser: the income distribution of the laureates' fathers.1/N

Seriously, go to therapy man. And stop projecting your insecurities onto the rest of us. You're miserable and want to impose #Project2025 on the rest of us, so that we're as miserable as you.

VP Wannabe is saying that atheists and agnostics do not have a value system. Then exclaims that DEI (i.e., fairness to all) IS their value system. Then proclaims that childless [cat] ladies are imposing DEI to make everyone as miserable as they are Pick one dude! It cant be all!

BREAKING: In a shocking leak, JD Vance calls women who cannot biologically have children miserable people. Retweet to make sure every American sees this and knows how vile Vance is.

@fringetracker @upulie I think most science communication from tertiary institutions and academics isn't well contextualised around the individual needs and wants of the audience they're trying to serve. Let alone understanding what the "need' or "want" from that audience actually is

To be honest, this is an indictment of a model not just of publishing but of science communication as pushing content to a fact-deficient audience. There’s no future in this if there is neither critical perspective (ie journalism) or responsive and engaged teaching.

Folks who have completed or are currently doing their PhD: If you were to have received a small welcome packet at your desk on Day 1 of your PhD, what would you want it to include? Some ideas: Post-its, a fun pen, highlighters, stapler, candy. What else?

I will also add I’m pretty sure there isn’t a common area trash receptacle on our floor. Only recycling bins.

Hi @Coles I’m Dr Kit, native bee expert. My PhD research was on #beehotels, and I have published numerous articles both in journals and for the public, including being featured on Gardening Australia. These are terribly designed. 1/

I could say a lot about how moving from academia into the civil service has improved my mental health… the main one relevant today is that I can’t get into public arguments about anything political. 😅 But do make sure that you go and vote today!

Happy to announce the publication of Gliese 12 b, an Earth-sized, temperate planet only 40 lightyears away! This is an excellent target for future studies to examine the atmospheres of temperate, rocky planets.
