FTR, I am in this space to have good conversations with good folk, share things that blow my hair back, and occasionally lighten the mood a little. I am not here in any official capacity, and I am fine with you engaging me as a fellow human and not as who I am in my day job😉

Pericles’ funeral oration was propaganda, and he knew it. Yet it still had to be spoken. Nor was it mostly wrong.

no one needs to learn how to tie a windsor knot. it's also not the knot that was worn in school. that would be the four-in-hand, which is why it's also known as the schoolboy knot
SonnyBoy🇺🇸@gotrice2024

Can we go back in time where school actually taught us skills we needed in life, how many young men now don’t even know how to tie a Windsor knot? It’s a crucial skill for life especially for formal events and job interviews, should this be required in school?

@SGTWipper1Each Depends. Am I singing a motet in Latin (in which case TIN-ee-toos), or talking about ringing in the ears (Teh-NIGH-tes)? And yes, that's a serious question.🤣 Latin names for diseases, species, etc usually have anglicized pronunciation.

@aviationarchive Very cool to see this. A friend of the family who had flown Puff and was somehow involved in this test told me about it in the mid-90s. It looks just as he described.

Test footage from Operation "Credible Sport" of a YMC-130H configured with 30 rockets in preparation for a rescue attempt of the hostages held in Iran in 1980. Takeoff test succeeded with front wheels lifting off after 10 feet. Full Landing failed with rockets firing early.👀

@DrAllyLouks Love this. Also, reminds me of the Feynman tale in one of his storybooks about his experiment in being able to smell which books on his home shelf his wife had held.

When you smell a book, you’re perceiving the smell of the paper, ink, and binding glue. The characteristic smell of old books comes from those very same materials slowly breaking down. So that smell everyone loves is the smell of decay. The more you know 🙂

Small moment of literary joy reading this is Borges’ “The Other Death” and thinking it very Conradian: “…a man pursued by an act of cowardice is more complex and interesting than a man who is merely brave.” …and then he references Lord Jim AND Razumov on the next page!

@AllBeretsMatter There are a lot of leaders out there who are the genuine article and doing a great job showing what right looks like and speaking with objectivity and humility. Be wary the few who make you feel like they are engagement farming (they are) and the fewer who are just Tartuffes.

It’s been something to watch the impact of extremely online leadership and how people have adjusted to take advantage. Respect the hustle I guess, but you can’t call it lethality when it’s just kneepads and yes-sir.
