The funniest part about all of this “it’s the players” talk is that everyone seems to forget players don’t come here without being offered. And players can’t get offered without ownership signing off on said offer. Who are the two people responsible for this roster (the recruiting, the negotiations, and the funding): Chris Ilitch and Steve Yzerman. It wasn’t too long ago we had a Top 5 owner in the league. If Mike Ilitch was 50 years old today and still owned the team, he’d walk down to Yzerman’s office himself and demand a new influx of players. Mike would be in the trenches with Steve, giving him all the resources in the world, and Mr. I wouldn’t tolerate this mediocrity (let alone for 7 years). Mike loved hockey, and was competitive as hell. Does that describe Chris? Nope. I know this because there are numerous stories about the level of care Mr. Ilitch had for the Red Wings. Ariticles, books, interviews, etc. He was as good as you could ask for in the NHL in his day. Do your research. But where would we rank Chris Ilitch 1-32 on NHL owners in 2026? He’s certainly not in the top 10, is he top 20? Is he bottom 10? I guess it’s debatable where he ranks between 11-32. Hard to win in this league when there are a dozen (or more) owners guys would rather play for than you. One thing isn’t debatable: Chris is not Mike. #LGRW
